| The
video states that Brown is an acceptable color for Pants
/ Shorts / Skirts. This is not accurate. Acceptable
colors for Pants / Shorts / Skirts under MISD's Standard
Dress Policy include only the
following colors: Khaki, Navy Blue and Black. We are
sorry for any confusion this may have caused.
Report cards will go home Thursday, October 9, 2008.

LUNCH
MONEY & FORGOTTEN ITEMS
Please make sure your child has all items needed each
day prior to coming to school. In order to limit class
disturbances and preserve instructional time, we will
no longer be able to deliver phone messages, lunch money,
lunches, or any other type of delivery. If lunch money
is brought to the school, it will be delivered to the
cafeteria and deposited directly into your student's
account. **The student will NOT
be notified. Our goal is to protect the learning environment.
We appreciate your cooperation.
"PRIME
TIME"
"PRIME TIME"
refers to the first twenty minutes of each class period
where students MUST remain in the classroom.
Students will not be allowed to go to lockers, the office,
restrooms, CMC, etc. during this time. This will be
"protected" instructional time for ALL
students.
STUDENT
PHONE USE
Student's cell phones should not be
out or in use before or during the school day. Once
a student arrives on campus, cell phones should be turned
off and put away for the duration of the school day.
A $15.00 administrative fee will be charged for confiscated
phones.
Students will not be allowed to leave
class to make personal phone calls in the office for
rides, the exchange of items, etc.

RAPTOR
SYSTEM
You will be pleased to know that all
of our Mesquite ISD schools will be using a new procedure
this school year to make our buildings safer for all
of our children. A new visitor registration system will
be used to keep a log of all the visitors to our campus
and will compare each visitor's name to the official
United States Registered Sexual Offenders list.
When a vistitor comes to our campus,
the visitor will be asked to provide an official
photo ID. This could be a United States driver's
license, a military ID, a photo ID from the Texas Department
of Transportation, or another photo ID issued by certain
official government agencies. The identification system
will compare the information to that in the national
sex offender database. If there is no alert matched
to the photo ID, a visitor's badge will be issued with
the person's name, destination, photo, and the date
and time of the visit. The visitor will be required
to wear the badge at all times while in the building.
When the visitor leaves, the badge must be returned
to the office. If a visitor does
not have a photo ID, the visitor will have limited access
to the building and will have an escort while in the
building.
Every adult in our school buildings
will have either an official MISD photo ID badge or
a badge from the new visitor registration system. This
will help us to quickly identify anyone who should not
be in the school. This system will take a few minutes
of your time when you enter the building, but those
few minutes will help us to ensure that our school is
safe for our children.
We appreciate your support and patience
as we implement this new visitor registration system.
If you have any questions about these procedures, please
call our school office.
STUDENT
SUCCESS INITIATIVE (SSI)
The state requirements of the Student
Success Initiative (SSI) have been in effect
with entering kindergarten students beginning in 1999
to ensure an overall system of support for student academic
achievement. It includes local assessment, additional
accelerated instruction and state assessment in the
areas of reading and math. In addition to local requirements
for promotion, there are also state requirements that
must be met in third, fifth, and eighth grades.
Beginning in 2002-2003, students in third grade had
to pass the state reading TAKS (Texas Assessment of
Knowledge and Skills) to be promoted to fourth grade.
Beginning in 2004-2005, students in fifth grade had
to pass both the reading and math TAKS (Texas Assessment
of Knowledge and Skills) to be promoted to sixth grade.
Beginning in the 2007-2008 school year, students
in eighth grade must pass both the reading and math
TAKS (Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills) to be
promoted to ninth grade.
As in the prior SSI third and fifth grade requirements,
these same procedures will be followed for eighth grade:
_ If a student does not pass the required TAKS reading
and math tests on the first testing opportunity, additional
accelerated instruction to strengthen reading and/or
math skills will be provided through your child’s
school.
_ A second testing opportunity for the reading and/or
math TAKS will be provided followed by additional reading
and/or math instruction to strengthen the skills of
the students who do not pass the reading and/or math
tests the second time.
_ The third and final testing opportunity will be provided
during summer school. If the student does not pass the
reading and/or math portions of TAKS on the third testing
opportunity, the student will automatically be retained.
It is critical to communicate regularly with your child’s
teachers throughout the school year to help your child
succeed. For more detailed information about state requirements,
please contact Ms. Gallegos, your child's principal.
