Congratulations to the Agnew Chess Team!
Corban Tharp, Dante Russell, Matthew Vines, Brandon Wagener, and Jonathan Welle represented
the Agnew Chess Team at the H.B. Gonzalez Chess Tournament. In a highly competitive tournament (only 2 ½ points separated first through 5th place) the Trojan Chess Warriors battled 40 students
from 12 middle schools and high schools across the Dallas metroplex. Each student played 5
matches scoring 1pt for a win and ½ pt for a draw. Collectively, Agnew was tied for 5th place
heading into the last round, but, the chess warriors battled back going undefeated in that last
round with 4 wins and a draw. They took 3rd overall with 8 ½ points in the 6th through 12th
grade division and finished 1st among middle schools. Matthew Vines scored the most points
for Agnew with 1 win, 3 draws, and 1 loss. Mesquite High School took home the 1st place
trophy with 10 ½ points followed by Woodrow Wilson High School with 10.
