English:
We are learning many new grammar rules, and we are receiving
instruction on the writing process. We have been working
on creating an idea bank that we will use to write a
personal narrative essay.
AT English: We, too, are busy learning the writing process.
We will write a personal narrative and study the tools
of editing and revision. In addition, we are reading
myths and studying the archetypal hero’s journey
in preparation for creating our original myths and accompanying
filmstrips.
Math:
This six weeks we will be covering:
Order of operations
Algebra-properties,functions, and equations
Absolute value
Integers- add, subtract, multiply, and divide
Equations and expressions-writing and solving additions
and multiplication
AT Math: This six weeks we will be covering:
Integers- add, subtract, multiply and divide
variables, expressions, and properties
Equations-solving addition, subtraction, multiplication,
and division
Rational numbers- comparing and ordering
Positive and negative fractions-multiplying and dividing
Like and unlike fractions-adding and subtracting
Science:
First six weeks in Science, we begin by talking about
safety and learning how to design an experiment. We
will also learn the phases of the moon. The majority
of the six weeks is spent learning about biodiversity
and the Rain Forest. Every week the students are required
to find a current event related to science.
Social Studies:
This first six weeks Texas history classes will focus
on identifying and locating the natural geographic regions
of Texas. We will then identify the native Texans that
live(d) in each region, and wrap up with the early European
explorers in Texas.
Reading:
During the first six weeks, students will respond to
readings, use self-selected reading materials, and have
mini-lessons featuring these objectives:
*Knowledge of Greek and Latin prefixes
*Use context clues
*Determine multiple-meaning words
*Recall facts/details
*Chronological order
AT Reading: In addition, we are completing book projects
over self-selected novels.

Expectations
Classroom Expectations:
1. Be in your assigned seat/area, ready to work when
the bell finishes ringing.
2. Bring/have paper, pencil, books and all needed materials
every day.
3. HFBO—Keep hands, feet, books and objects to
yourself.
4. Profanity, rude gestures, cruel teasing or put downs
are not permitted.
5. Follow directions of any adult working at this school.
Learning Choices:
Occasionally, students ignore classroom expectations.
Teachers will give students cues, reminders and will
redirect them to focus on their work to get them back
on track. When the misbehavior continues, the following
will occur:
*Preminder-Reminds student of expected behavior before
it occurs.
*Cue-A non-verbal signal
*Verbal Redirect(s)-Teacher asks student to follow directions.
*Refocus Area-Place and time to think and re-adjust
behavior
*Buddy Room-Time to refocus with another teacher
*Critical-For serious disruption such as fighting, destroying
property, refusing to work or for serious defiance,
your child would be sent to the Principal. You would
be contacted to come to the school and your child counseled.
Pride Folders: A pride folder is a portfolio where students
will keep record of their achievements. It is a scrapbook
of the success they have had during the year. Pride
folders will be kept in Advisory classes.
Goal Setting: The purpose of goals is to focus students’
mental attention. A goal is a promise to oneself and
is something one wants to have, do or become. Students
will complete goal sheets each six weeks and keep in
Pride Folder and notebooks.
Grading System: MISD grading policy will be enforced.
Please refer to student handbook.
Homework: The amount of homework will vary from class
to class. Late work will only be accepted if the student
has an excused absence.
Heading: Each paper turned in by students MUST contain
a complete heading in the upper left hand section of
the paper.

Absences and Make-Up Work: When a student has an absence
from school, he/she is allowed to make up the work missed.
He/she will receive one day for each day absent in which
to complete the missed work. It is the responsibility
of the student to get work from all of his/her teachers.
When a student’s absence is unexcused, make-up
work will not be allowed.
Late Work: 30 points will be deducted from each late
assignment. Student will have 1 school day to make up
late assignment or a zero will be given.
Cheating: Conduct grade will be lowered one letter grade
for each occurance.
Tutoring: It will be the responsibility of each student
to make arrangements with teacher prior to coming in
for tutoring.
Each team teacher’s tutoring times are as follows:
Jackson (Reading)- Tuesday and Wednesday 3:30-4:00
Brewer (Social Studies)- Every afternoon from 3:30-4:00
Craig (Science)- Every morning 7:30-8:00
Davis (Math- Tuesday and Thursday 3:30-4:00
Cerda (English)- TBA
TAKS: The TAKS test will be given during this school
year. This test will evaluate a student’s skill
and knowledge in core subjects. Seventh graders will
be given adequate preparation to do well on this important
assessment of student achievement.
Substitute Behavior: Any violation of team expectations
when a substitute is in the classroom will result in
an automatic in team suspension day. This policy will
be strictly enforced.
Locker Use: The following schedule must be followed
daily.
Before 7:45- all students
Before 1st Period- all students
After 1st Period- girl’s athletics only
Before/After 4th-all students
Before 8th Period-boy’s athletics only
After 8th- all students
SAM (Student Assignment Manager): Students will receive
a SAM book each six weeks. It is the responsibility
of each student to fill out their SAM each day for each
class. Parents should check SAM nightly to ensure assignments
have been completed neatly and successfully.
Hall Pass: Students will receive one hall pass each
six weeks. Each six weeks hall pass will be a different
color and have eight passes for each student to use.
After the eight passes have been used, student will
not be allowed to leave class. Passes may not be shared.
Please talk to your student about using their hall passes
wisely. Doctor’s note will be the only way a student
may have permission to use the restroom after passes
are used.
Advisory: Students will attend advisory 6th period on
Thursday only. Advisory will be utilized to hand out
school communication and to work on homework. Students
will also receive report cards during advisory. If a
parent does not receive a report card after the six
weeks, please contact front office in person and a copy
will be made for you.
Tardies: Each teacher is responsible for keeping up
with tardies. The first tardy is a warning, the second
will be a teacher assigned detention, the third will
be another teacher assigned detention. On the fourth
tardy the teacher will send a referral to the office,
the office will deal with the student and will issue
an after school detention.
Note: Each individual classroom teacher may have additional
procedures required for his/her class. Please keep and
reflect on student code of conduct book and team expectations
packet throughout the year.
