Dear Parents,

Learning is a lifelong process for us all.  This article has some helpful information to help you during your lifelong learning.

Get To Know Your Children’s Teachers

Often, other people make the decisions that affect and influence your children. This is especially true in the classroom. And to what extent do you, as a parent, have a say in decisions made in the classroom? Plenty.

The National PTA and the National School Public Relations Association offer these tips for developing a better relationship with your children’s teachers:

  • You do not have to wait for specially designated times such as open house to visit your children’s school. Parents should be welcome any time.

  • Before you meet with teachers, write a list of topics you want to discuss and any questions you may have so you won’t forget anything.

  • Ask your children what they would like you to talk about with their teachers. You may wish to include them in the discussion as well.

  • Share information that might help teachers better understand your children. What are their favorite subjects? What subjects are they having trouble with? Does the child have special needs the teacher should be aware of?

  • Find out specific ways you can help your children perform better in school.

  • Ask about resources available to parents and students. Is there a homework hotline? A tutoring program? A phone number or computer bulletin board where parents can find out about homework assignments or school events? Is there an evening when teachers are available for parents who work during the day?

  • Feel free to ask questions about any issue that concerns you -- homework and discipline policies, tests and grades.

  • If the teacher points out a problem, try to remain calm. Remember, you and the child’s teacher both want the same thing -- to help your child do well in school.

A Back-To-School Check List

The first few weeks back to school can bring jitters to students and families alike. There are many things that can be done to help make the back-to-school transition easier. When you, as a parent, interact with and support your children, your children are more likely to be successful.

You can help younger children if they know:

• Their name, address, and phone number;

• How to take outer clothing on and off;

• How to take care of their basic toilet needs;

• How to be patient and wait their turn.

As a parent, it is recommended that you:

• Establish definite times and location for homework;

• Attend parent-teacher conferences;

• Join the school’s parent-teacher association;

• Keep the school calendar handy;

• Volunteer -- opportunities are expanding for working parents;

• Stay informed about school events;

• Serve on a school or district advisory committee;

• Get to know your children’s friends;

• Teach your children how to say “no” to peer pressure;

• Make sure all parties have adult supervision.
