Registration for children who may qualify through the language criteria will be held March 25 through April 11. Appointments for language testing must be made at campuses with bilingual sections (Florence, Floyd, Galloway, Gray, Hanby, Hodges, McWhorter and Porter) beginning March 25.
Registration for children who may qualify through income, homelessness, or as military dependents will be held at regular pre-kindergarten campuses (Florence, Floyd, Hanby, Hodges, McWhorter, Motley, Pirrung, Seabourn, and Tisinger) from August 4 through August 15.
To register your child the steps below must be followed:
- Parents must establish student enrollment eligibility. Parents must show picture identification and bring these documents to the campus to begin the registration process:
- Proof of residency (current utility bill or lease agreement)
- Child’s immunization record
- Child’s birth certificate
- Child’s social security card
- Students must then qualify by meeting one of the following criteria
- Language criteria (Testing and registration – March 25-April 11)
- The child must be tested. Campus personnel will make an appointment for the child to be tested on a specific date and time at the Bilingual/ESL Enrollment Services Center (BEES Center). No testing will be done without an appointment.
- If language testing results qualify a student, BEES Center personnel will direct the parent to a specific campus for registration. The parent must register the student within two days at the specific campus.
- Bilingual pre-kindergarten classes can only enroll students who have qualified as bilingual. Parents who deny bilingual services must then qualify their child under the income criteria or a criteria other than language.
- Income criteria (Qualification and registration – August 4-15)
- The parent must bring proof of income of both parents to the campus. Income proof must be recent pay stubs, food stamp eligibility letter or TANF eligibility letter.
- The parent must complete a Pre-Kindergarten Income Eligibility form to determine if the child qualifies.
- Homeless criteria
- Homeless criteria will be determined by appropriate staff.
- Military dependent criteria
- The child must be a dependent of an active member of the United States armed forces or the child of a service member who is MIA (missing in action) or who was injured or killed while serving on active duty.
School will begin on all campuses Monday, August 25, 2008. Each child will attend one session daily either from 7:55-10:55 a.m. or from 11:55-2:55 p.m. Transportation will not be provided. School sites are subject to change based on student enrollment. Enrollment in pre-kindergarten is not mandatory, but children who do enroll are under the same attendance rules as other students and are expected to attend class daily.
