Galloway Elementary School Attendance Guidelines
Notifying the school of student absences:
Anytime a student is absent from school the parent or guardian needs to send a hand written note with the student on the day he or she returns to school. The note needs to contain the name of student, date(s) of the absence(s), reason for the absences, along with the parent or guardian’s name and signature. Calling the school on the day of the absence is highly encouraged, but a hand written note is still required for the absence to be excused. Three absences per semester will be excused by hand written notes. If your student is out 3 consecutive days a doctor note will need to be provided for the absences to be excused.
What types of absences are excused?
Illnesses for up to five days per semester will be excused by a note from the parent or guardian. More than five absences due to illness will require a doctor’s note to be excused. Absences are excused if a student attends the funeral of a family member with funeral documentation (program or obituary). Religious holy days that are approved in the Mesquite ISD Student Handbook are considered excused if the parent or guardian provides the appropriate documentation.
Doctor or Dentist Appointments:
According to the State of Texas, a student who is in attendance for a portion of the school day, and then attends a medical appointment will be counted present if a correctly dated doctor’s note is submitted upon the student’s return to school. The absence or tardy will be marked “unexcused” until a doctor’s note is presented.
What types of absences are unexcused?
Going out of town, visiting family, running errands, or other personal reasons are not considered excused absences. Family trips or other out-of-town excursions that occur during the school day are not excused. Our expectation at Galloway Elementary is that our students will be present each day school is held. We understand that certain situations arise that require students to miss school, but we hope that we can work together to keep those situations to a minimum by personal business appointments being scheduled outside the school day whenever possible.
Arriving late or leaving early:
If a student arrives to school after 8:10 A.M. or is picked up from school before 2:35 P.M., he or she has missed 15 minutes of instruction and are considered to have a partial day absence. For truancy purposes, partial day absences are considered to be unexcused absences. If the student will be attending or has attended a medical appointment, the absences will be changed when the appropriate documentation is provided. If a student is sent home by the school nurse during the school day, the absence will be excused.
Consequences for unexcused absences and Truancy laws:
Please be advised that Section 25.085 of the Texas Education Code states that a child who is at least six years of age who has not reached the child’s 18th birthday shall attend school unless exempted by law. The law also stipulates that “upon enrollment in prekindergarten or kindergarten, a child shall attend school.” Children enrolled in PK or K are under the same attendance requirements as all other schoolchildren of the State. The law (SB 1432. Sec. 25.094) states that a student commits an offense of the law if the student is absent from school on 10 or more days or parts of days within a six month period or on three or more days in a four week period. Should the total number of absences reach or exceed ten days in a six month period or three days in a four week period, the district may file a complaint against you and/or the student in County, Municipal, or Justice of the peace Court. In the event that you or your child is found in violation of the Texas Compulsory Attendance Law, you would be subject to prosecution under Sec. 25.093 or 25.094 of the Texas Education Code.
Request for absences on “Holy Days”
Prior written request is required if a parent is requesting an absence for this reason.

Las Normas/Guías de Asistencia de la Escuela Primaria de Galloway
Se tiene que notificar a la escuela con relación a las ausencias del estudiante:
Si su hijo/a llega a faltar a clases, el padre/madre/tutor necesita mandar una nota por escrito con el estudiante el día que él ó ella regresen a la escuela. La nota tiene que tener el nombre del estudiante con apellido, fecha(s) de la ausencia(s), razón por lo cual él/ella estuvo ausente, junto con el nombre del padre/madre/tutor y la nota tiene que estar firmada. Es recomendable que los padres hablen a la escuela el día que su hijo/a falte a la escuela, pero una nota por escrito es necesaria para que la falta pueda ser justificada. Tres ausencias por semestre serán justificadas siempre y cuando haya notas por escrito y entregadas en la dirección/oficina. Si su hijo/a falta 3 días consecutivamente, una nota de su doctor/pediatra será necesaria para que las ausencias puedan ser justificadas.
¿Qué tipo de ausencias son justificadas?
Enfermermedades, hasta cinco días por semestre, serán justificadas siempre y cuando el padre/madre/tutor mande una nota por escrito. Más de cinco ausencias/faltas por enfermedad una nota del doctor será requerida para que las faltas/ausencias puedan ser justificadas. Ausencias/faltas son justificadas si el estudiante asistió a los servicios funebres de un miembro familiar con documentación del funeral como por ejemplo: (el program del servicio funebre u obituario). Días religiosos los cuales son aprovados en el Libro de Conducta del Estudiante del Distrito Indepedendiente de Mesquite son considerados justificados si el padre/madre/tutor proveen la información apropiada.
Citas de Doctor o Dentista:
Deacuerdo con el Estado de Texas, si un estudiante el cual asistió a la escuela una porción del día, y después asiste a una cita médica, va a ser contado/a presente si una nota del doctor/dentista es entregada con la fecha correcta de la visita, a la escuela cuando el estudiante regrese a la escuela. La ausencia o llegada tarde/tardío serán marcadas “sín justificación” hasta que una nota del doctor sea presentada.
¿Qué tipo the ausencias/faltas son injustificadas?
Salir de la ciudad, visitar a un familiar, hacer diligencias/mandados, ó cualquier otra razón personal no son consideradas faltas/ausencias justificadas. Paseos familiares ó cualquier otra excursión familiar que sea durante horas escolares no son justificadas. Nuestra expectativa en la escuela de Galloway es que nuestros estudiantes estén presentes todos los días que haya clases. Nosotros entendemos que ciertas situaciones pueden surgir y que requieren que los estudiantes no asistan a clases, pero nosotros esperamos que podamos trabajar juntos para mantener esas situaciones al minímo, cuando les sea posible, favor de progamar/hacer sus citas personales cuando no haya clases ó después de horas escolares.
Llegar tarde o salir temprano de la escuela:
Si un estudiante llega a la escuela después de las 8:10 A.M. ó es recogido/a de la escuela antes de las 2:35 P.M., él ó ella ha perdido 15 minutos de instrucción y ésto es considerado como falta/ausencia parcial del día. Por el propósito del ausentismo escolar, ausencias parciales son consideradas ausencias sín justificación. Si el estudiante va a ir al doctor ó ha ído al doctor, entoces la ausencia será cambiada cuando la documentación apropiada sea proveída a la escuela. Si el estudiante es mandado a casa por la enfermera escolar durante horas escolares, la ausencia será justificada.
Consecuencias por ausencias/faltas sín justificación y las leyes por ausentismo escolar:
Se les informa que la Sección 25.085 del Código de Educación de Texas establece que si un niño/a el cual sea por lo menos seis años de edad y que no haya alcanzado su 18avo cumpleaños tiene que asistir a la escuela, almenos que sea exento/a por la ley. También la ley estipula que “al registrarse/matricularse en el PK ó Kinder están bajo los mismos requisitos como todos otros estudiantes del Estado. La ley (SB 1432. Sec. 25.094) estipula que un estudiante comete una ofensa en contra de ley si el estudiante es ausente de la escuela por 10 ó más días ó partes de los días en un período de 6 meses ó tres ó más días en un período de cuatro semanas. Si el número total de ausencias/faltas alcanza ó excede díez días en un período de seis semanas ó tres días en un período de cuatro semanas, el distrito puede entablaecer una demanda encontra de usted y/ó de su hijo/a en el condado, Municipio, Corte con el Juez de Paz. En el evento que usted o su hijo/a sea encontrado/a en violación de la Ley Obligatoria de Asistencia de Texas, usted va a ser sujeto a una interpocisión judicial/proceso de juicio bajo la Sec. 25.093 ó 25.094 del Código de Educación de Texas.
Solicitación de ausencias en días Sagrados/Santos
De antemano es requerido una petición por escrito si es que el padre/madre/tutor solicita una ausencia por ésta razón.

Los Reglamentos de Asistencia del Distrito de Mesquite, y los requerimientos del estado están explicadas en el Libro del Código de Conducta y en el Libro del Estudiante del año escolar 2011-2012.
