| The Elementary Physical Education Programs at MISD allow students and teachers opportunities to participate in several special events outside of our regular program offerings. Each campus has a choice of which activities best fit their campus goals.
1. Punt, Pass & Kick: The National Football League sponsors this competition each year during the months of September and October. Students between the ages of 6-15 practice the football skills of punting, passing and kicking. The top boy and girl from each school in five age categories compete in a sectional competition at Hanby Stadium for a chance to move on to the team competition at a Cowboy game. Mesquite ISD is the proud home of Aysia Mitchell, 2009 National Punt, Pass and Kick 8-9 year old girls' champion (see photo at right). In recent years, MISD has sent many students to compete at a Cowboys game and the NFL has flown two students to a play-off game for the national competition. Punt, Pass & Kick is a great way for students to showcase their skills. |

2. Jump Rope For Heart: This event is sponsored by the American Heart Association and is an educational fundraising event for medical research that helps prevent heart disease and stroke. Not only does JRFH teach our elementary students the benefits of physical activity and ways to keep their heart healthy, but it also engages them in community service. Many of our schools choose to conduct this event during the month of February to coincide with Valentine's Day! Mesquite ISD received a Distinguished Service Award in 2007 for its outstanding participation in Jump Rope/Hoops for Heart and AHA's Go Red Campaign. The award helped fund a research project at the UT Southwestern Medical Center.
3. Hoops For Heart: Like Jump Rope For Heart, Hoops For Heart also promotes the benefits of lifelong heart-healthy lifestyles while introducing students to community service. Hoops for heart is generally conducted with our older elementary and middle school students and allows students to develop basketball skills and play fun and exciting skills games.
4. Sport Stacking Tournament: Mesquite ISD hosts an annual sport stacking tournament each spring. Motley P.E. teacher, Ryan Davis coordinates this exciting event. Sport stacking is a fast, fun and colorful event that consists of stacking 12 specially designed plastic cups in predetermined formations as fast as possible. It has been described as a “track meet for your hands” developing focus, bi-lateral proficiency and quickness. You have to see it to believe it, so go to www.speedstacks.com to view the action.
5. End of Year Play Days: Each elementary school conducts a day full of fun activities for the entire student population sometime during the month of May. Play Days are always a highlight of each school year and offer students a chance to “kick up their heels” and celebrate the beginning of summer.
6. Skatetime/Skating 101: Many of our elementary schools contract with these skating companies to actually deliver skates to the school and teach students the basics of in-line and quad skating. This two-week emphasis proves to be a favorite among students who can skate to music, learn new skating activities, and just socialize with friends while participating in a worthwhile physical activity.
7. Elks Hoop shoot: Each year many schools choose to participate in the basketball free throw contest sponsored by the Mesquite Elks Lodge. Students are divided into age groups and by gender to compete in a best of 25 free throws. Local school winners advance to the lodge competition held in January at Agnew Middle School.
