Summer Academic Sessions 2011

HIGH SCHOOL

PURPOSE:
The purpose of the High School Summer program is to enable students to take courses for credit toward graduation and/or college entrance which they might not be able to take during the regular school year and/or to regain credit for courses they did not pass during the school year.

LOCATION:
Classes for Grades 9-12 will be held at Dr. John Horn High School.

REGISTRATION:
Students will be able to pre-register for classes at their home campus from May 3 through June 4.  Students are encouraged to pre-register.  High School students who do not pre-register will register from 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon on June 10 at Horn High School. Out-of-district students will be able to register from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. on the same date for any classes where space is available.  Registrations will be accepted through the third day of classes, but each day will count as one of the three allowable absences.  See attendance rule below.

SUMMER SCHOOL DATES:
Summer School classes for high school students will be at Horn High School beginning on Tuesday, June 14 and ending on Thursday, July 21. Classes will be held Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. each day for high school students taking a one-credit course and from 1:20 to 4:10 p.m. for high school students who wish to take an additional one-half credit course.  July 4th will be a holiday.

GRADE REPORTING:
Report cards will be sent to students at the end of the semester.  There will be communication with parents if students are not making satisfactory progress between grading periods.

ATTENDANCE:
Credit cannot be given in any subject if a student is not in attendance for 90% of the time unless otherwise determined by the Attendance Committee.  Tardy minutes will also be included in the absence totals.

WEB-BASED COURSES:
Some summer courses will be available as on-demand learning.  This learning opportunity provides a comprehensive, engaging, and flexible format for students.  Students can access their coursework from a home computer and work at their own pace to complete the course.  However, an intensive timeline exists in order to complete coursework.  Students are limited to one web-based course. Factor to consider:  time commitment, computer access at home and the self-paced rigor.
