The Dr. Ralph H. Poteet High School marching band captured the University Interscholastic League State AAAA Marching Band Championship held Monday, November 3, 1997 in Waco. The Pirate Band is the first MISD marching band to win a state title. |

To celebrate this achievement, there was a victory parade through the halls of Poteet High School on Wednesday, November 5. The parade began at 9:30 AM. Members of the band marched through the school with the State Champion trophy.
The Pirate Band outplayed and outmarched 20 other AAAA bands to earn the title. This was the fifth time the band had qualified for the state finals. The band earned several honors in other competitions on its way to State, including Best Horn Line, Best Drum Line and Best Band in Contest.
