Special Activities and Events

Special Events

The Elementary Physical Education Programs at MISD allow students and teachers opportunities to participate in several special events outside of our regular program offerings.  Each campus has a choice of which activities best fit their campus goals.

  1. Jump Rope For Heart: This event is sponsored by the American Heart Association and is an educational fundraising event for medical research that helps prevent heart disease and stroke. Not only does JRFH teach our elementary students the benefits of physical activity and ways to keep their heart healthy, but it also engages them in community service. Many of our schools choose to conduct this event during the month of February to coincide with Valentine’s Day!
  2. Hoops For Heart: Like Jump Rope For Heart, Hoops For Heart also promotes the benefits of lifelong heart-healthy lifestyles while introducing students to community service. Hoops for heart is generally conducted with our older elementary and middle school students and allows students to develop basketball skills and play fun and exciting skills games.
  3. Punt, Pass & Kick: The National Football League sponsors this competition each year during the months of September and October. Students between the ages of 8-13 practice the football skills of punting, passing and kicking. The top boy and girl from each school in three age categories compete in a sectional competition at Hanby Stadium for a chance to move on to the regional competition at a Cowboy game. We have some great football talent in Mesquite and this program not only provides our PE programs with additional football equipment, but also allows students to showcase their skills.
  4. End of Year Play Days: Each elementary school conducts a day full of fun activities for the entire student population sometime during the month of May. Play Days are always a highlight of each school year and offer students a chance to “kick up their heels” and celebrate the beginning of summer. Elementary Play Day Schedule
  5. Family Fun Nights: On at least one night of every school year, families of students are invited to the gym to see many of the physical activities that go on during the school day. Parents are invited to learn more about how they can contribute to a healthier, more active lifestyle for their children and can actually participate in our newest physical activity, the CLIMBING WALL.  Each campus family fitness night activities vary according to the physical education teachers program.
  6. American Heart Walk: As an extension to our Feet Across Mesquite Walking Program, MISD. employees will walk 3.1 miles each year in the American Heart Walk sponsored by the American Heart Association raising money to fund lifesaving research and education programs to fight heart disease and stroke. The 2002 Heart Walk was held at the American Airlines Arena and MISD. raised more than $6000!  This year on September 20th we raised $1,500 and had over 30 participants walk.
  7. Skatetime/Skating 101/Skate To Blade: Many of our elementary schools contract with these skating companies to actually deliver skates to the school and teach students the basics of in-line and quad skating. This two-week emphasis proves to be a favorite among students who can skate to music, learn new skating activities, and just socialize with friends while participating in a worthwhile physical activity.
  8. Elks Hoop shoot: Each year many schools choose to participate in the basketball free throw contest sponsored by the Mesquite Elks Lodge. Students are divided into age groups and by gender to compete in a best of 25 free throws.
