Selected Astronomy and Space Resources

Astronomy Organizations

Astronomical Society of the Pacific
This professional organization is dedicated to astronomy education. Check out "The Universe in the Classroom" newsletter and "Project ASTRO," which brings professional astronomers into the classroom.

SETI Institute
This site is devoted to the scientific search for other life in the universe.

International Meteor Organization
There is a great opportunity for doing science with "falling stars." This site explains how. Here is a mirror site.

Project CLEA
Project CLEA provides free astronomy simulation software for both Macintosh and Windows users. Most of the projects are college-level, but many will work well in high school classes.

NASA Spacelink
NASA's main link to the education community. Many resources for teachers.

International Dark Sky Association
As cities spread, we are losing the view of the stars our ancestors had. This site suggests ways to get involved in the battle against light pollution.

Ask a Space Scientist
Dr. Odenwald's "Ask a Space Scientist" page offers answers to the most common astronomy questions people ask. You can leave a question for him if you wish.

Sky & Telescope Magazine
One of the oldest astronomy magazines still published in the U.S. Excellent source for information about what to see in the sky tonight.

Astronomy Magazine
Another excellent astronomy magazine. This one prides itself on its spectacular photos of the heavens.

Space Probes

Jet Propulsion Laboratory
In spite of its name, JPL is mainly concerned with space probes. This is the main JPL page. Specific sub-sites for current probes are listed below.

Cassini Mission to Saturn
Cassini will not arrive at Saturn until 2004, but you'll be able to find extensive information about the mission here. Cassini will explore the only moon known to have a thick atmosphere: Titan.

Galileo at Jupiter
The Galileo spacecraft is sending back data and images of Jupiter and its moons. This site has the latest pictures.

Mars Exploration Program
Rover Twins may be exploring Mars in 2003. Mars Surveyor pictures and movies are at this site too.

The Space Shuttle
This is the main link to information about the Space Shuttle and the International Space Station.

Solar Observatory
Known as SOHO (Solar & Heliospheric Observatory), this space probe sends back detailed pictures of the sun.

Latest HST Release
View the latest images from the spectacular Hubble Space Telescope.

The Solar System

The Nine Planets
This online encyclopedia of the solar system is continually updated. For information about the solar system, this is the first place to look.

Lunar and Planetary Institute
All the results from lunar and planetary probes are here. A special area features 3-D views of the planets, if you have the special glasses.

Comets and Meteor Showers
This page helps you get the most out of observing new comets. There are also hints about viewing meteor showers.

The Comet Page
There are lots of images of comets here.

NASA Solar Eclipse Bulletins
Detailed guides to upcoming solar and lunar eclipses.

Observing Guides

Heavens Above
This is a guide to what's visible in the sky, customized for your particular location. This is the best place to go for information on observing artificial satellites.

Izzy's Skylog
Each month there is a sky calendar and a featured constellation. Also try the "Ask Izzy" feataure.

Moon Calendar
Moon Calendar was written primarily for elementary school students. It shows the phases of the Moon for each day of a selected month.

Earth and Sky
The internet version of the award-winning daily science radio series. This site frequently explains what to look for in the evening sky.

Stardate
This site, based on the radio program, features daily observing tips, excerpts from the "Stardate" magazine, and a link to McDonald Observatory.

The Texas Astronomical Society
This Dallas-based astronomy club offers a friendly way to learn about the hobby of astronomy. TAS has a club observatory at a dark site in Oklahoma. Club meetings are at Richland College each month.

Astronomy Images

Galaxy Photography
Local astronomer Jason Ware offers his spectacular views of celestial objects. Many of these photos have appeared in astronomy magazines.

Astronomical Image Library
This site indexes the thousands of astronomical images scattered across the internet.

Anglo-Australian Observatory Images
Using some of the world's largest telescopes, David Malin has photographed many of the sights of the southern sky.

Astronomy Picture of the Day
You never know what you'll see at this site, since it changes daily. Previous pictures of the day are also available.

NCSA Astronomy Digital Image Library
The purpose of the Astronomy Digital Image Library (ADIL) is to collect astronomical, research-ready images and make them available to the astronomical community and the general public.
