Tech Talk - May 2005

It’s spring, and it’s a great time to perform some spring cleaning on your mail and
computer files!

I am sure many of you have noticed painfully slow response times while using GroupWise. This is due to the large volume of mail contained on the server. As we continue to save more and more messages, the speed of the system becomes even
slower and ultimately affects everyone.

Take some time to review the messages in your mailbox. The first thing to ask is, “Do I really need this message?” If it is important enough to keep, you might consider moving the message to a secure mail folder that you create within your Private Network Folder. By doing this, your archived messages can still be available to you while giving our mail server some “breathing room” for the newer and most important messages.

The Help Desk has posted information on Docushare that will give you step-by-step instructions on how to archive your e-mail. To find them, simply go to Docushare and perform a search for “Archive GroupWise.” This is also a good time to review other files contained within your Private Network Folder and clear out any unnecessary ones.

Remember, even when we take the load off our mail server by archiving older email messages, we create an extra burden on our files servers, causing the same “slow response” time.

The district has a limited amount of electronic storage space, so everyone will benefit from each of us doing some much needed spring cleaning.
