Ms. Koogler's Research Project
 

Introduction

Students will complete an error free research paper (and presentation) for the 5th 6 weeks of Mrs. Koogler's English III class.


Students: use the following as a guide for ideas, information, MLA documentation, and paper organization.

 

Research paper objectives

Requirement checklist, you may work ahead if you please.

•  Take an interest in a research topic

•  Learn something new

•  Utilize the NMHS library for research

•  Use netTrekker and the NMHS library databases as research resources

•  Document research

•  Use at least three Internet sources

•  Use two or more hard-copy sources (including books, magazines, and newspapers)

•  Contact a professional or an expert (on your topic)

•  Document communications with professional or expert

•  Keep an accurate bibliography (use proper bibliography format) *

•  Draft and re-write a research paper

•  Edit a peer's paper

•  Ask an English teacher to edit (take the initiative and come in before or after school if necessary)

•  Ask a parent or adult edit

•  Produce an error free final draft

•  Present information to the class

•  Show what you learned from your research (in your presentation)

*Avoid plagiarism at all costs (remember plagiarism is illegal, it will result in a failing grade, and even changing words without giving credit to the source is wrong).

Search for a book: Click on the "Power Search" tab and set "Type" to Book. Put your search term in the "Everything" box and click on the "Go" button. Nonfiction books will have a number and books with numbers preceded by an "R" will be found in the Reference Section.

The best way to begin a search in Pinpoint is to use the default mix; however, you may want to change "Type of Information" to another kind of search.

Paper Process

Deadline:

•  Notes (and/or note cards)

•  Sources (minimum 6 sources: 3 Internet, 2 hardcopies, 1 expert or pro)

•  Bibliography

•  1 st draft

•  English teacher editing

•  Re-write

•  2 nd draft

•  Peer editing

•  Re-write

•  3 rd draft

•  Parent or adult editing

•  Re-write

•  4 th draft (hopefully the final draft, but no guarantees)

•  Check format for bibliography

•  Type* final draft and bibliography

•  Submit on or before deadline

*If computer labs are available, then everyone will be required to type; otherwise it's optional.

 

After the Paper: Presentation

•  5-10 minutes in front of class

•  show what you learned (you are required to have one visual : drawing, graphs, pictures, PowerPoint presentation, video, etc.)

•  involve your audience (this takes planning , but I can make copies for you, you can set up the room how you would like it, etc.)
