Mr. Eunice Sikes McKenzie, son of pioneer Mesquite settlers, attended Mesquite schools. As an adult, Mr. McKenzie was a banker, starting at Guaranty State Bank and later at First State Bank and First National Bank of Mesquite. He later moved to the new Grove State Bank where he worked until his retirement.
Mr. McKenzie's main interest was in the Mesquite Independent School District. He was elected to the school board in 1926 and served for 24 years as a member, Secretary, and finally President of the board. For his devotion to the education of the children of Mesquite, McKenzie Elementary School was named in his honor.
