Ferd A. McWhorter
	Ferd A. McWhorter was born August 29, 1901 in Effingham, Illinois. He was the second son of seven children. His parents moved to Seagoville in November, 1901. As a boy, Ferd worked in his father's stores, selling merchandise, and going into Dallas to buy dry goods from a wholesale house. Ferd worked as a tax assessor for Dallas County and was elected to the Mesquite ISD school board several times. In 1943, Ferd McWhorter opened the store that still stands today on the square in downtown Mesquite. This store served the community around Mesquite for many years. Ferd McWhorter died on April 5, 1958. In 1959, Ferd A. McWhorter Elementary was built and dedicated in his name. In August 2004, a new chapter in the history of Ferd McWhorter Elementary began with the opening of the new 85,000 square foot campus.
