Faculty & Staff > Clinic

The Mesquite High School Clinic is designed to treat minor injuries and to act as a temporary “waiting room” for students who have become ill during the school day. Should a student become ill, only persons designated on the Health Information /Emergency Release Card will be contacted to pick up the student. All telephone numbers must be recorded on the Health Information/Emergency Release Card and updated immediately if changes occur during the school year.

Clinic Staff:
Danja Maharrey: Nurse
Peggy Bailey: Nurse's Aide

    • itchy, red eyes with discharge
    • unknown rash
    • untreated scabies, impetigo
    • ringworm of the scalp (until treatment has been started)
    • headlice or nits
    • any draining wounds
  • Immunization Requirements
In order to attend Mesquite High School students must be current on all vaccinations and a record must be provided to the clinic before a student will be allowed to enroll. In accordance with state law, students in grades 9-12 must have the following before they may enroll and attend school:
    • 3 doses of DPT with one dose on or after the 4th birthday
    • 3 doses Polio with one dose on or after the 4th birthday
    • 2 doses MMR received on or after the 1st birthday
    • 3 doses Hepatitis B
    • Age appropriate Varicella immunization or the date if child had chickenpox
  • Medication Policy
When sending medications for a student, please read the following guidelines very carefully. If you have any questions about this policy please contact the nurse.
Please pick up any unused medication from the clinic before the last day of school or it will be destroyed.
    • Medications
All medication should be given outside of school if possible. Most medications, even those scheduled for three times per day, can usually be given outside of school hours. Also, Texas state law does not permit public schools to provide Tylenol, Advil, cough preparations or other over-the-counter medications to students unless these are prescribed by a physician and supplied from home.

      Medications must be:

      • In the original, properly labeled container (no baggies or envelopes, please!).
      • Up to date (check expiration date before bringing it to school), and
      • Age appropriate in dosage.
      • New medication forms must be completed at the beginning of each new school year and/or when any medication changes are made by the physician.
      • All medication which has not been picked up by 2:15 pm on the last day of school will be disposed of properly. No medication will be kept in the clinic during the summer.
    • “Controlled Medications”:
All controlled medications are counted by the school nurse and locked in a secure cabinet. All prescription medications must be in the original, properly labeled containers. The pharmacy can supply two (2) labeled bottles for this purpose. Medication sent in baggies or unlabeled containers will not be given.
    • Inhalers:
For students who need to carry their inhalers at school, please complete the Asthma Action Plan form, which must be signed by the student’s physician. We request that a second inhaler be kept in the clinic in the event that the student forgets the inhaler at home. All inhalers must have a label on the inhaler or be sent with the box prescription label.
  • Release from Clinic Policy
Should a student become ill, only persons designated on the Health Information /Emergency Release Card will be contacted to pick up the student. The designated person must physically come into the clinic to sign the student out before the student will be released from the clinic.
