Dancing on the Roof

Ms. Avery told her students that if they got 100% on TAKS, she would dance on the roof of the school. 

She danced to Celebration on Thursday, May 25th.

Moss students had the opportunity to vote for the teacher they wanted as Moss Teacher of the Year.

College Week

Faculty and Staff got into the College Spirit the week of May 8-12 by decorating the school.  Students created their own school pennant to hang in the hallway.
Students were encouraged to wear their favorite college shirt on May 10th, their sunglasses on May 11th because the "future is so bright they have to wear shades," and a team hat on May 12th.

Pennies for Patients

Moss students raised $1,527.16 for Pennies for Patients.  Way to go!  Congratulations to the top collecting classes:  Mrs. McCrillis (K), Ms. Kennedy (1st), Mrs. Gaigalas (2nd), Ms. Avery (3rd), Ms. Shuttleworth (4th), Mrs. Jaynes (5th), and Mrs. Otero (6th).  The top collecting class was Ms. Fant's (6th) with $381.60!  Thank you to everyone who donated!

 

Students participated in the Marathon Kids 26.2 miles during PE.

Carol Zolnerowich,

Deputy City Manager of Mesquite,

spoke to Third Grade on May 3rd

She shared the history of Mesquite, the services the city of Mesquite offers, jobs with the City Government, and roles of city government employees.  She also had the students get involved with her interactive slide show.

 

Parents joined Helen Griffin, Moss Counselor, on April 11th to learn more about sending their children to college.  MISD will be getting students involved in thinking about college and life after high school during the week of May 8th-12th.

Tape Mrs. Nelson to the Wall!

Students in Third, Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Grades had the opportunity to "Tape Mrs. Nelson to the Wall" if they increased their Milestone or Benchmark scores from one test to the next.  Third Grade increased their Reading scores, Fourth Grade had good Writing scores, and Sixth Grade improved their Math scores. 
Kindergarten and First Grade came by to see Mrs. Nelson taped to the wall.  
   

 

 

Third Six Weeks Attendance Party

All Moss students that had perfect attendance the third six weeks had the opportunity to play Bingo on Friday, January 27th. All of the students had a great time playing and winning prizes.

Sixth Grade Incentive Parties

 

 

Sixth Graders who have perfect attendance and are on the honor roll are invited to participate in off campus activities with their teachers and families.  Students had fun at Celebration Station for their first six weeks celebration, enjoyed dinner at Joe's Crab Shack for the second, and had a "ball" bowling and playing games for the third. 

 

Students who sold the most with our school fundraiser earned a limo ride to CiCi's Pizza.

 

Community Service Projects

 

  • Our 5th grade students have collected fleece donations and other personal effects to share with Mesquite Social Services.

School Donations

Terra Nova High School in Pacifica, CA donated school supplies & backpacks for hurricane evacuees. 

Sixth Grade students assisted Mrs. Piepenbrink fill the backpacks for new students. 

 

Pumpkin Patch

Moss students had the opportunity to visit the Pumpkin Patch on Wednesday, October 19th. 

Mrs. Cheek's 4th Grade class is happy to show off their pumpkins.

 

Fire Safety Week

Firefighters from Station 4 in Mesquite came to visit the Kindergarten students at Moss. The students learned

important fire safety tips. They were allowed to look inside the fire engine as well as the ambulance. Finally, two of our

teachers raced to see who could be the first dressed in full gear. Can you guess who they are? Finally, the firefighters

were given a great big send off to which they replied by sounding their sirens and horns.

 

 

 

Maria Sotolongo - Fox 4 Weather

Fourth Grade welcomed Maria Sotolongo to Moss. She shared behind the scenes

information with students and staff on how weather reports are generated,

focusing on the specific factors that go into Fox's daily weather forecasts.

Due to recent events, she also shared facts about hurricanes and the process

used to predict their origin,point of landfall and their severity.

Students were given an information booklet discussing

safety procedures used during severe weather conditions.

 

Bottled Water for Tulane University's Football Team

Moss students, faculty, and staff brought over 1,650 bottles of water! 

That is a lot of water! 

It filled up the bed of Mrs. Duke's husband's pick-up truck and the backseat. 

Thank you so much for your donations. 

Sixth graders assisted in loading the truck so the water could be delivered the weekend of September 10th. 

Mrs. Duke also delivered cards, letters, and posters to the football players showing our well-wishes for a successful season.
