RELEASE DATE: February 14, 2005
The Mesquite ISD Board of Trustees voted unanimously to name Dr. Linda Henrie the district’s 22nd superintendent during the Feb. 14, 2005, regular meeting. According to the Texas Government Code, the Board must now wait at least 21 days before finalizing the superintendent's contract with Dr. Henrie. She replaces Dr. James Terry who announced his retirement after nearly 40 years of service to MISD. Dr. Henrie will become the first woman to lead the MISD when she takes office in July.
“When I began teaching at Mesquite High School in 1967, I could not have imagined my career would lead me to this point tonight,” said Dr. Henrie. “I am so proud that I have had the opportunity to work in this very special place with some of the best educators, administrators and board members in the field.
“Dr. Terry and the leaders before him have created a legacy of excellence that is known throughout the state. As superintendent, I will strive to continue the tradition they have established and build upon the successes they have achieved. As you know, one of Mesquite ISD’s core values is continuous improvement, and I will do everything I can to ensure that our students reach new heights of excellence,” she added.
MISD Board President Gary Bingham said “Dr. Henrie has a wonderful history with this district. She brings with her not only an incredible knowledge of curriculum and education issues, but tremendous people skills and depth of character that will enable her to excel in this new position.”
Dr. Henrie has served a variety of positions since coming to Mesquite in 1967 as a high school business teacher. She left the classroom in 1986 to serve as assistant principal of Vanston Middle School. In 1989 she became the administrative officer for curriculum development. She moved to assistant superintendent for instructional services in 1994. In 2001 she was named deputy superintendent, the position she currently holds.
She earned her master’s degree at The University of North Texas and her doctorate at Texas A&M-Commerce. She is active in numerous educational associations and civic groups. In 1998 she served as chairman of the Mesquite Chamber of Commerce and is currently completing her 2nd year as president of Texas ASCD (Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development)
