The Poteet Pirate Marching Band has won the 2007 UIL Class 4A State Marching title. The Pirate band won its second marching band championship in three years and third overall since 1997 on Tuesday and did so with near perfection.
Four of the five judges gave Poteet perfect scores and the Pirate band finished with a composite score of eight, nearly half of the total from runner-up Austin Connally, to take the championship Tuesday at Alamodome in San Antonio.
Mesquite Poteet was judged to be better than 23 other elite Class 4A bands. The top 10 bands advanced to the finals and Poteet took four of the five top ratings.
Poteet has advanced to the state marching band contest 10 times since 1990. Poteet last won the state championship in 2005, also winning in 1997 and finishing as runner-up in 2001. Poteet had top five finishes in 1993 and 1995, in addition to 1997, 2001 and 2005. The Pirate band also appeared at the state marching competition in 1990, 1991, 1999 and 2003. Poteet’s band is under the direction of Scott Coulson.
