PHS Band Named Class 4A Honor Band

The Poteet High School Honors Band has just been named the 2008 Class 4A Honor Band for the State of Texas by the Texas Music Educators Association. This is the most prestigious award that can be given to a Texas high school concert band. The Poteet Honors Band will travel to San Antonio in February to perform at the Texas Music Educators Association Convention.  Only one high school from each cassation is selected, and PHS is the first MISD band to earn this high honor.

Each band that enters the competition submits recordings of three pieces from performances from the current school year.  These pieces must include one march and two other selections. Each selection submitted must be a continuous performance, which was recorded at a concert, festival, or contest.

The Poteet Honors Band submitted “Entry March of the Boyars” by Johan Halvorsen, ed. by Frederick Fennell, recorded at the Murchison Center for the Performing Arts at the University of North Texas on May 3; “Colonial Song” by Percy Grainger, ed. by Mark Rogers; and “Redline Tango” by John Mackey, both recorded at the U.I.L. Concert - Sight-Reading Contest on April 11 at Poteet High School. 

As a result of being named “Texas Honor Band”, The Poteet Honors Band will be performing at the annual TMEA Clinic/Convention in San Antonio, Texas on Friday, February 15, 2008 at 8pm in the Lila Cockrell Theatre at the San Antonio Convention Center as the featured concert of the convention.

To celebrate their accomplishment, the Poteet band directors and chaperones hosted a pizza party in the PHS band hall just for members of the award-winning Honor Band, including the 2007 graduates who will not be able to perform at the TMEA Convention.  Director Scott Coulson congratulated the band members and thanked them for their hard work.  The award-winning performance tape was played while band members enjoyed pizza and cake.
