Ending a chapter in a career that has spanned 38 years in public education, Mesquite ISD Superintendent Dr. John Horn announced his retirement during a special school board meeting Thursday night. Dr. Horn has been the superintendent of MISD since 1986. His retirement will be effective June 30, 2001.
Following Dr. Horn's announcement, the Board unanimously declared its intent to name Dr. James Terry as the district's 21st superintendent. Dr. Terry came to MISD in 1967 and has served as deputy superintendent since 1989. According to Texas Government Code, the Board must now wait at least 21 days before holding a special meeting to finalize the superintendent's contract with Dr. Terry.
From July 1, 2001, to November 15, 2001, Dr. Horn will assume the title of Special Assistant to the Superintendent to help assist in the transition process.
Since 1950, MISD has had only three superintendents — T.H. McDonald, who served from 1950-1964; Dr. Ralph Poteet, who served from 1964-1986; and Dr. Horn. With the average tenure for Texas superintendents being less than five years, this is a remarkable achievement.
"My time in Mesquite has been rewarding in so many ways," said Dr. Horn. "The achievements we have made and the plans we have set will continue to provide a high standard of education for all children."
In 1998, the Board honored Dr. Horn by naming the district's fifth high school after him. This year MISD is celebrating its centennial year and the honor of being named a Recognized District by the Texas Education Agency.
"Many of these accomplishments were achieved directly through Dr. Horn's leadership. His vision and drive have served as a role model for all of us," said MISD Board President Randy Dobbs. "Our Board is confident that Dr. Terry will continue this tradition. His leadership has already had a great impact in the district's success." |
