Five MISD Students Selected
as Texas All-State Musicians

Five Mesquite ISD students were recently selected as All-State musicians, announced District Director of Fine Arts John Kline. The students are:

  • David Cavozos, Percussion Player, Horn High School Band, Sophomore
  • Savannah Ervin, Trumpet Player, North Mesquite High School Band, Junior
  • Cathy Hinkley, Soprano 1, Horn High School Choir, Senior
  • Micah Krajca, Tenor 2, Mesquite High School Choir, Junior
  • Dashon Moore-Guidry, Percussion Player, Poteet High School Band, Junior

“All-State is the most prestigious recognition that a high school music student in Texas can achieve,” said Kline. “It also can open up college scholarship opportunities to them.”

These students are among 1,500 students selected through a process that began with over 60,000 students from around the state vying for this honor to perform.  High school students selected to perform in the All-State concerts have competed through several levels of auditions beginning in the fall of 2011 to arrive at the state level.

The All-State Band performance will take place Saturday, Feb. 11 at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio. It will be part of the 2012 Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) Clinic/Convention. TMEA sponsors the All-State competition.

“Mesquite ISD has one of the best programs in the state,” said Kline. “We have great teachers who do great things with their students and programs.”

Kline, who has been with the district for 39 years, said Mesquite ISD backs fine arts and believes it is important to the whole child. “We’re very lucky here.”
