The Board of Trustees designated property located at Carver Street and Main Street as a permanent memorial to honor MISD’s centennial celebration. This area was developed as Centennial Park commemorating a century of excellence in MISD through a display of sculptures of children and books, benches and commemorative plaques and floral designs. The park will serve as a permanent reminder of all those who have helped to shape the district during its first 100 years.
The year-long centennial celebration culminated in a gala event planned for March 31, 2001, which brought together members of the school district, the City of Mesquite and Mesquite citizens to acknowledge the community’s tradition of educational excellence through cooperation and support.
Heroes of MISD
The Mesquite ISD Centennial Celebration Committee sought nominations from the Mesquite community for “100 Heroes of MISD.” Through this effort, the committee selected 100 individuals, families, organizations and businesses who have made a significant impact on Mesquite ISD through their leadership and commitment to excellence in public education.
Centennial Park Statues
Pictured above is one of three bronze statues that have been selected for display in Mesquite ISD’s Centennial Park. This one, titled “Bookworm,” stands 46 inches high. The other statues depict a young girl standing and two children seated, all reading books. These particular designs were selected because of the enormous impact books have had on the first 100 years of education in MISD. To view the full-size image of the statue, click on the photo above.
Centennial Park Brick Walkway
Mesquite ISD’s Centennial Park includes a brick walkway featuring individual names from members of the Mesquite community. Individuals, families, businesses or organizations were invited to purchase a brick and personalize it for placement in the walkway. |
