Mesquite ISD Joins School Funding Lawsuit

Mesquite ISD Joins School Funding LawsuitEarlier this month, Mesquite ISD joined a group of other districts in a lawsuit against the State of Texas over school financing inequities.  Mesquite’s Board of Trustees voted to support the Texas Taxpayer and Student Fairness Coalition’s (TT& SFC) lawsuit. To date this coalition, with a main focus of taxpayer and student equity, is comprised of more than 300 school districts and counting.

“Our district is underfunded, but our achievement is high,” said Superintendent Dr. Linda Henrie. With the higher accountability standards mandated by the state, though, she said additional resources will be needed to maintain excellence at MISD.

As one of the lowest funded districts, MISD has long been a proponent of equity in public school financing. Many of the districts around MISD receive as much as $1,000 more per student. “We’re going to take up the banner of equity,” she said.
