The Mesquite ISD Board of Trustees has named North Mesquite High School head coach Steve Bragg the district’s new Administrative Officer – Athletics. Coach Bragg will become the MISD’s fourth Athletic Director and will oversee all athletic operations for the 35,000-student district. Bragg replaces Mickey DeLamar who is retiring in early 2007.
“I am excited about the opportunity to serve the student-athletes and staff in this new capacity,” said Bragg. “It is an honor to follow such innovative leaders. Mesquite ISD is one of the most respected programs throughout the state and nation.”
Coach Bragg, a North Mesquite High graduate, began his teaching/coaching career in 1983 at his alma mater. In 1989 he moved across town to Poteet High School, where he served as offensive coordinator until 1999, when he left MISD to take a head coaching position. He led Pittsburg High School in 1999 and Commerce High School in 2000. In 2001 he returned to NMHS as head coach/campus athletic director and has led the Stallions to 33-26 record, including two playoff appearances.
Coach Bragg earned his bachelor’s degree at The University of North Texas; he also holds a master’s degree in educational administration from Texas A&M – Commerce.
The Mesquite ISD has five high schools and eight middle schools. Mesquite, Horn and North Mesquite high schools compete in District 12-5A, and Poteet and West Mesquite play in 10-4A. The MISD operates two first-class stadiums: Memorial Stadium and Hanby Stadium.
