Jags Name New Head Coach, Campus AD

The Mesquite ISD has selected Rodney Webb as the Head Football Coach/Campus Athlete Director at John D. Horn High School.  Following Board approval on February 11, Coach Webb replaces Don Payne, who resigned following the 2007 season.  Coach Webb has 18 of years experience at high schools in Texas and New Mexico.

“I am extremely excited about joining the Mesquite ISD and becoming a member of the John D. Horn community,” said Webb.  “I have heard tremendous things about the campus, the students and the district. There is a lot of potential at Horn, and with the new district alignment comes a new excitement.  I’m looking forward to making the Jags competitive.”

Webb leaves Royse City after five years, where he led the Bulldogs to a record of 44-16, including four consecutive playoff appearances.  He began his career as an assistant at Tarleton State (where he played and earned his degree) and has also served in Elgin, Glen Rose, Austin and Garland ISDs.  Prior to Royse City, he spent seven years as a head coach in Ruidoso, NM, before returning to Texas in 2002.  His overall record as a head coach is 50-20.

He was named the 2007 District 10-3A Coach of the Year and the 2004 District 9-3A Coach of the Year, both while at Royse City.  In October 2007, Coach Webb was inducted into the Tarleton State University Athletic Hall of Fame.  He is married with one daughter.

Webb becomes the second head football coach in Horn’s eight-year history.  Under Payne, the Jaguars compiled a 20-40 record.  Horn competed in the 4A level before moving up to 5A in 2002.  Following the new UIL alignment, Horn will play in District 11-5A with De Soto, Mesquite High, North Mesquite, Tyler and Tyler Lee.
