| The Mesquite ISD Board of Trustees approved the hiring of two assistant athletic directors at the April Board Meeting. Veteran coaches Donna Capps and Gary Taylor will serve under Athletic Director Steve Bragg and assist in the day-to-day operations of the athletic department.
Donna Capps is completing her 33rd year as a teacher and coach. She spent the first 12 years of her career with the MISD, where she guided the North Mesquite girl’s basketball team to the state tournament in 1988. She left the district in 1990 to accept a position with the Mabank ISD in order to be near Crandall, where she and her family had established a residence. Following a year in Mabank, she served for 10 years at Crandall before moving to the collegiate level, where she has led UT-Arlington to a record of 119-81 over the last seven-year period. Ms. Capps received her bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from Texas A&M-Commerce.
Gary Taylor is completing his 27th year in education, 20 of which have been with the Mesquite ISD. He spent one year in Tolar, five in Garland, and one in New Boston before joining the staff at Mesquite High as an English teacher and coach in 1987. In addition to his role as an administrative intern, Coach Taylor has spent the last 13 years as head basketball coach at MHS and led them to a berth in this year’s state tournament. Mr. Taylor obtained his bachelor’s degree from SFA and his master’s and administrator’s certification from Texas A&M-Commerce.
“I am excited to have two individuals as extremely qualified as Coach Capps and Coach Taylor joining the Mesquite ISD administrative team,” said Bragg. “They bring a proven level of success along with outstanding leadership, both on the field and off.”
The Mesquite ISD has five high schools and eight middle schools. Mesquite, Horn and North Mesquite high schools compete in District 12-5A, and Poteet and West Mesquite play in 10-4A. The MISD operates two first-class stadiums: Memorial Stadium and Hanby Stadium.
