School History

Porter Elementary opened August 27, 1979. It was dedicated on September 30, 1979. The second addition to Porter was completed in 1985. The school was a source of great pride to Gil Porter, the school's namesake. He considered the school to be the greatest honor ever awarded him. Nothing was closer to his heart than education and young people.

Gil Porter owned and operated Porter Drug on the square in downtown Mesquite . The soda fountain in the store was a favorite after school gathering place, as well as a training ground for many teenagers who worked behind the soda fountain. Mr. Porter purchased the football uniforms for the Mesquite High School football team and stored them at his drug store. Gil Porter was involved in many civic and church activities in the community from the 1930's-1960's. He served as a member of the Mesquite ISD School Board for fifteen years.

Gil Porter's son, Bill Porter, has continued the family's commitment to education. He began his teaching career in 1960 at Wilkinson Middle School as a 9th grade world history teacher. After forty years of service in Mesquite ISD, Bill Porter retired from his position as principal of Agnew Middle School .

Each year Porter Elementary strives to assist each child in the development of their fullest potential.
