A sixth grade student at Rugel Elementary qualified to participate in the NFL Pepsi PUNT, PASS & KICK (PPK) team competition at Texas Stadium prior to the Dallas Cowboys vs. New York Giants game on Sunday, December 14, 2008.
The PPK program is a national skills competition for boys and girls between the ages of 8 -15 to compete separately against their peers. Each participant’s score is their measured total distance and accuracy of their punt, pass and kick. This program which began in 1961 is considered one of the world's largest youth sports participation programs with over four million boys and girls participating from around the country.
Local PPK contests are conducted at MISD elementary and middle schools as a
part of their physical education curriculum. Winners in all age groups
advanced to a Sectional Competition which was held at E.H. Hanby Stadium on
October 15, 2008.
A total of 13 Sectional contests were held in North Texas, Oklahoma,
Arkansas and New Mexico that would advance the top five scorers in each age
group to the Team Competition at Texas Stadium.
She won third place honors with her 206’6” performance. This is her second time to represent Mesquite at the Texas Stadium team competition.
