B.J. Smith has been
an active leader in Mesquite for more than 35 years, serving
the community through city government and the school board.
B.J. served the
citizens of Mesquite as an elected official for a record total
of 24 years. For 10 years, he served on the Mesquite City
Council, and he spent five years as mayor of Mesquite. In
addition, he sat on the Mesquite ISD Board of Trustees for
nine years. B.J. is the only person in the city's history
to serve as both mayor of the city and president of the school
board.
Throughout his life,
B.J. has worked to promote and preserve a positive relationship
between the schools, the city, the Chamber of Commerce and
local businesses, and he continues to do so today. After 30
years in private law practice, B.J. took over the Office of
City Attorney in November 1988, a position he still holds
today.
The Mesquite Bar
Association honored him with a lifetime membership. Through
the efforts of Smith Elementary School's PTA, B.J. was further
honored with a lifetime membership in that organization. |
