Walter L. Wilkinson was respected and loved for his work in the church and as a civic leader.  He served on both the Mesquite City Council and the MISD Board of Trustees as well as holding a number of offices at the FIrst Baptist Church.  He also held many offices and civic responsibilities, including many years as City Secretary, a Charter member of the Lions Club, Music Director of the First Baptist Church, and sang first tenor for the Mesquite Masonic Quartet.

At the dedication of Wilkinson School, Dr. James G Gee, President of East Texas College complimented the School Board on the appropriateness of naming the school for former School Board Trustee Walter L. Wilkinson, noting that Wilkinson had “contributed much to the cause of public education as well as to his church and to civic well-being.”  President Gee’s closing words characterized the life of Wilkinson as qualifying for a well-known definition of success: “He has achieved success who has lived well, laughed often and loved much.”
