MISD Ready to Go Red for Women
  • Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the nation’s leading cause of death and stroke is the third leading cause of death in women.
  • CVD claims the lives of over 480, 000 American females (about one death per minute) each year.
  • In 2006, the estimated direct and indirect cost of cardiovascular diseases and stoke in the U.S. was estimated at $403.1 billion.
  • More women die of CVD than the next four leading causes of death combined, including all cancers and only 13% of women consider CVD their greatest health risk.
  • One in three females has some form of CVD.

The Mesquite Independent School District will be joining forces with the American Heart Association (AHA) and concerned companies and organizations across America in the fight against heart disease and stoke by participating in Go Red for Women.  On Friday, February 12, 2009 the Mesquite ISD and the city of Mesquite will Go Red in honor of women everywhere.

Wear Red Day is a chance to for us to arm ourselves with knowledge about this devastating disease and to raise funds that will help the AHA advance its research and education efforts. Because of the district's commitment to the cause the AHA has named a research grant in our honor.

We are trying to get everyone on board with this campaign to help fight heart disease and empower women to take charge of their heart health by encouraging them to make health a top priority so that they can love longer, stronger lives. Please contact Mary Randall for additional information.

KC and the Sunshine Band to Headline Foundation Gala
The Mesquite ISD Education Foundation proudly presents A Lone Star Legacy, featuring music super group KC and the Sunshine Band live in concert on March 26, 2010.

The Foundation’s fourth annual benefit concert and dinner will be held at Resistol Arena (1818 Rodeo Drive, Mesquite).  The gala dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m. followed by the concert at 8 p.m.

KC and the Sunshine Band are still as widely popular today as they were when they first danced onto the music scene 37 years ago. Harry Wayne Casey – KC, for short – developed a unique fusion of R&B and funk, with a hint of a Latin percussion groove, giving us an impressive string of hits like Get Down Tonight, That’s The Way (I Like It) and Shake Your Booty.

Concert-only tickets are on sale now and may be purchased for $20 and $30 at www.ticketmaster.com or at the Resistol Arena ticket booth.  Table sponsorships, which include dinner prior to the concert, begin at $1,000; individuals or groups may sponsor a table by calling Foundation Executive Director Linda Lentz at 972-882-7513.  For the latest concert information, visit the Foundation’s website at www.mesquitefoundation.org.

The Mesquite ISD Education Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation dedicated to enriching and enhancing the education of Mesquite ISD’s 37,000 students.  The Foundation seeks to create a permanent endowment that supplements public education dollars.  Programs are funded from donations and endowment earnings.  The Mesquite ISD Education Foundation will rely on A Lone Star Legacy as its major fundraiser for this school year.  All net proceeds from the concert will go directly to benefit MISD programs for students.

For more information about the Foundation’s Lone Star Legacy event, please call the Mesquite ISD Education Foundation office at (972) 882-7513 or visit them at www.mesquitefoundation.org

Shaw Student Wins Punt, Pass and Kick Competition
With a total distance of 218 feet, Shaw Elementary third grade student Aysia Mitchell won the national finals of the NFL’s Punt, Pass and Kick competition. Aysia and her father traveled to San Diego last weekend where she competed in the finals prior to the Chargers-Jets AFC playoff game.

Aysia's score was 21 feet longer than the second-place finisher in her division. She received an autographed football, helmet, photos and other Cowboys and NFL memorabilia. She, along with the other winners, was featured on the stadium's video board and on national television.

She qualified for the national finals by finishing first in the 8-9 year old girls division competition held prior to the Cowboys-Redskins game Nov. 22. This is the second consecutive year MISD has sent a student to the finals.

Local P, P & K competitions were held earlier this fall at most Mesquite ISD elementary schools. Approximately 120 winners of the local school contests advanced to Mesquite’s sectional competition sponsored by The Mesquite Parks and Recreation Department. The top five scores from the 14 sectional competitions held across North Texas and the surrounding states qualified for the Team Competition held at Cowboys Stadium. Six MISD students placed at that contest.
