MHS Coach Arrested

Mesquite ISD is saddened to confirm that a Mesquite High School coach was arrested January 26 on charges of an inappropriate relationship with a student.  Of course, allegations of this nature are very troubling and directly conflict with the high expectations we have for our staff members.  The district is fully cooperating with the Mesquite Police in the investigation of what appears to be an isolated incident.


Results in from Region 9 Academic Decathlon Meet; John Horn High School Students Advance to State

Students from all five MISD high schools competed at the recent Region 9 Academic Decathlon Meet, said Administrative Officer of Instruction Susie Court, who oversees the district's academic decathlon program. "John Horn is advancing on to state and will represent our district at the meet Feb. 24-26 in Aldine, Texas," she said. Horn placed sixth in Region 9 and placed 32nd out of 40 state teams. More


Berry Middle School Reading Teacher
Angela Gregory Wins Educator Award

Star Party at the Planetarium Richland College has selected Angela Gregory of Berry Middle School as a 2012 National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) Excellence Award recipient.  Gregory teaches Voyager reading at Berry and reading, speaking and listening classes through Richland’s World Language Department.

The NISOD, a consortium of over 700 community colleges and universities worldwide, recognizes faculty for outstanding contributions to teaching, leadership and learning. She will be recognized at the NISOD International Conference at the University of Texas at Austin in May.

“To teach and then to be acknowledged and hear the words ‘well done’ by your peers makes me feel validated as a teacher,” Gregory said of the award.

She has been teaching for 21 years—16 in Mesquite ISD at Berry. “I was here when we opened the doors at Berry, and now we have just a few original staff members.”

Set for Monday, January 30, 2012

Star Party at the PlanetariumSee Jupiter through powerful telescopes and more at this month's Star Party at the Russell Planetarium near West Mesquite High School and Memorial Stadium. The free event under the 30-foot dome is set from 7 to 10 p.m. Monday, January 30.

With the help of Texas Astronomical Society of Dallas volunteers, kids will also get the chance to make a Solar System model and learn more about the hobby of astronomy.

Each spring Mesquite ISD solicits distrct input on the Student Code of Conduct, including the elementary, middle school and high school dress codes. Please send your suggestions to be considered for the 2012-13 code update to Administrative Officer for Instruction Susie Court by Feb. 17.


Five MISD Students Selected
as Texas All-State Musicians

Five Mesquite ISD students were recently selected as All-State musicians, announced District Director of Fine Arts John Kline. The students are:

  • David Cavozos, Percussion Player, Horn High School Band, Sophomore
  • Savannah Ervin, Trumpet Player, North Mesquite High School Band, Junior
  • Cathy Hinkley, Soprano 1, Horn High School Choir, Senior
  • Micah Krajca, Tenor 2, Mesquite High School Choir, Junior
  • Dashon Moore-Guidry, Percussion Player, Poteet High School Band, Junior

“All-State is the most prestigious recognition that a high school music student in Texas can achieve,” said Kline. “It also can open up college scholarship opportunities to them.”

These students are among 1,500 students selected through a process that began with over 60,000 students from around the state vying for this honor to perform.  High school students selected to perform in the All-State concerts have competed through several levels of auditions beginning in the fall of 2011 to arrive at the state level. Porter Elementary Wins $1,454 Grant
to Promote Healthy Eating & Exercise

Porter Elementary Wins Grant

Porter Elementary recently received a $1,454 Fuel UP to Play 60 Grant from Dairy MAX for healthy eating and physical activity initiatives, announced District Coordinator of Physical Education and Health Education Susan Henderson. Dairy MAX partners with the NFL Play 60 Movement that encourages physical wellness.

“It’s awesome that P.E. teacher Maggie Lester took the initiative to apply for this money to enhance the coordinated school health program for the school,” said Henderson, adding that this grant will be used to emphasize healthy eating and physical activity at Porter.


Poteet High School Selected as GRAMMY
Signature Schools Semifinalist for 2012

Poteet High School is one of the 125 schools nationwide selected as GRAMMY Signature Schools semifinalists for 2012. Finalists will be announced in mid-March 2012, and the selected schools will receive a custom award and a monetary grant ranging from $1,000 to $10,000 to benefit their music program. More
