Mesquite ISD provides free and reduced-price cafeteria meals for students from families who qualify based on federal government guidelines. The meals served each school day are offered through the National School Breakfast Program/National School Lunch Program.
Applying for benefits
Parents are encouraged to apply EARLY for the meal program. The application will be available August 6, 2007 at the Food and Nutrition Services office located in the MISD Service Center at 800 E. Kearney, between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday.
To make sure the application is processed quickly, print clearly, use one character per box, mark the boxes with an ‘x’, and complete all required information. To avoid delays, complete O N E APPLICATION per family, list everyone in the household and an adult signature is required. Multiple or incomplete applications will delay processing.
Most students will bring home an application during the first week of school. Parents may complete the form for their family and return it to school for processing, which may take UP TO 10 DAYS. Parents will need to provide lunch money or a sack lunch until they receive a notification letter stating the eligibility change.
Automatically added (no application needed)
The Health and Human Services organization provides a list of active MISD students that are on their family's food stamps or TANF case. We AUTOMATICALLY ADD those students that have been identified WITHOUT an application.
A letter will be mailed before school to the family to notify them that the student(s) have been automatically added to the meal program WITHOUT an application. If a student is not listed on the family’s case with the Health and Human Services an APPLICATION will be needed for that missing student.
Returning students
A family must re-apply each school year. If a student was on the meal program at the end of the previous school year, the benefit will continue for the first 30 days of the new school year. If no new application is processed, the benefit will end on October 11, 2007.
Re-applying
Applications are accepted throughout the school year. Families may re-apply any time there has been a change in the household size or income. Applications are strictly confidential and are used for the purpose of determining eligibility for the meal program.
