Reading Programs at Austin

The Texas Bluebonnet Award (TBA) reading program was established in 1979 to encourage Texas children to read more books, explore a variety of current books, develop powers of discrimination, and identify their favorite books. The award process provides librarians, teachers, parents, and writers with insight into young students' reading preferences. It further affords an opportunity to honor and encourage imaginative authors who create books with high appeal to children.

For students in grades 3, 4, 5 or 6

Access this web site to find more information on the books on the 2005-2006 Texas Bluebonnet Award List.  This is an interactive web site where students can vote for their favorite book and learn about books that are similar to Bluebonnet titles they have read.
The Mockingbird reading list is a list of 20 picture books recommended by Mesquite librarians for students in grades PreK- 2. Teachers read the books aloud to classes, then student vote for their favorite book.
Austin students may participate in the Six Flags theme parks and Weekly Reader 2004-2005 Read To Succeed® program. The program features the Six Flags Six Hour Reading Club®, which encourages kids in grades K through 6 to complete six hours of recreational reading and rewards them with free admission tickets to participating Six Flags theme parks. Watch this space for more information coming later!
