Cancer Project
 

Introduction

The student will make a 5 minute Public Health Awareness Announcement to the class about cancers which attack organs of the various body systems. Your presentation will include a poster with a diagram of the system with tissue and organs labeled.

Choose 3 interesting/rare/common forms of cancer that attack this system. Your report should include the following information in order: Symptoms, Diagnosis, Cause of disorder if known, Prognosis, and Treatment. The report must be typed and sources cited.

To search the library catalog, click on the icon at left, then type search terms  in the search box like cancer, oncology, human body, body systems, cancer cells and specific types of cancer found in the breast, prostate, lungs, kidneys, bladder, esophogus, ovaries, cervix, brain, thyroid, skin, liver, mouth, salivary glands, adrenal glands, bone, pancreas, etc.

Specific books on cancers will be found in 616.99. Other numbers that may be helpful: 362, 572, 617, 618.

The Merck Manual of Medical Information  is a detailed site with many links for disorders, diseases, conditions and other health information.

American Cancer Society is a nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer through research, education, advocacy, and service.

To search online databases , click the PowerSearch icon at left.

Using an online database is the same as using a book or reference in the library. Online databases are resources in a virtual library. They are not web sites.

To search reliable websites, click on the netTrekker icon to the left, then click on the "Differentiated Instruction" icon.

In the Science section, choose Biology, then Human Biology in which to search.

In the Health & Physical Ed. section, choose Health, then Disease Conditions and Disorders, then Non-Communicable Diseases to search cancer.
