Masks Optional Effective Nov. 9

Masks Optional Effective Nov. 9

Effective Nov. 9, 2021, masks are optional for students, staff members and visitors in all Mesquite ISD schools and facilities. This change in protocol is supported by several factors, including the following:

  • Low infection rates continue. Mesquite ISD’s COVID-19 infection rates reflect current rates for Dallas County and other area school districts. Infection rates remain low following Fall Break.
  • Vaccines are now available for students ages 5-11.
  • Current legal status assumes GA-38 is in effect. Mesquite ISD has sought to follow the rule of law, changing governmental mandates and court rulings. However, thus far, the courts with ultimate jurisdiction have failed to resolve the issue of which governmental mandate is controlling. This judicial hesitation has left the district without guidance as to which mandate should be followed. Based upon review of the status of the numerous cases concerning mask mandates presently pending in Texas, Mesquite ISD’s attorney has advised the district that, in his opinion, the district is not precluded from modifying its mask policy.

Mesquite ISD will support any student or staff member who prefers to wear a mask for health concerns.

Staff members who work with medically fragile or compromised students are strongly encouraged to wear masks in addition to following other health safety protocols.
