On May 5, 2018, Mesquite ISD voters approved $325 million bond package that included a new choice career high school, the district's 10th middle school, its 34th elementary school, expansions on Cannaday, Porter, Pirrung, A.C. New and Vanston, as well as the addition of a second gym/tornado shelter at each middle school. Below is a summary of all major bond projects that have been completed and new facility projects underway.
The project includes a new one-story second gym addition (12,750 SF) and a one-story classroom addition (9,000 SF) to the existing A.C. New Middle School.
New Classroom Wing Additions: (2) science labs, (4) classrooms, (1) new band breakout space, cafeteria expansion, (2) additional band breakout room renovations
Practice Gym Addition: locker rooms, coaches’ offices, other support spaces, storm shelter (12,000 SF)
The construction of the new gym has ICF walls and a unique steel joists roof structure.
The project included a new one-story classroom addition (15,000 SF) to the existing Cannaday Elementary School, adding 11 additional classrooms.
The scope of construction also included an ICC500 storm shelter of approximately 7,500 SF within the classroom addition. The storm shelter has an occupant capacity for the entire school.
The project’s site development included revising existing site utilities in the new building and additional parking area.
Based on the Lanny Frasier Middle School design, the new Dr. Don Woolley Middle School serves up to 1,200 students in grades 6 through 8. The 193,000 SF school includes athletic features such as an 8-lane track, football field, tennis courts, practice fields, and space for future expansions.
The library, cafeteria, art classrooms, and classroom wings provide views into the outdoor learning courtyard that is positioned at the heart of the school. The fine arts wing includes band, orchestra, and choir halls, as well as a drama classroom directly adjacent to the cafetorium.
Along the main corridor, the media center is located across from the learning courtyard, with storefront window walls to provide transparency and natural light.
This 12,000 SF project is comprised of a new one-story classroom addition to the existing Porter Elementary School consisting of the following:
- 10 additional classrooms
- a storm shelter of approximately 6,000 SF within the classroom addition
- construction of a new gym with ICF walls and special steel joists roof structure
- revision of existing site utilities in the area of the new construction

Envisioned to look more like a high tech office complex than a traditional high school, this new concept serves 2,000 students from all over the Mesquite School District. Unlike the District's traditional high schools, Mesquite ISD’s Vanguard High School does not offer extracurricular programs like fine arts and athletics; rather, the curriculum is intensely focused on academics and career or college preparation.
The campus features four schools and the following programs:
School of Engineering: auto collision; auto tech; engineering, robotics and logistics
School of Technology: computer programming; graphic design; visualization and animation
School of Construction Science: architecture and construction technology
School of Health Sciences: dental assistant; EMT; medical assistant; pharmacy technician; sports medicine; simulation lab with nurse desk; and firefighter simulation.
Opened in 2021, the 264,000 SF campus features a central open commons area, four classroom wings, a walking trail, courtyards, and outdoor learning spaces.
The project consists of a new one-story second gym addition and two-story classroom addition to the existing Vanston Middle School. It will include the following:
- a classroom wing housing 10 classrooms
- a new second gym
- dressing rooms
- group restrooms
- support spaces
- a gym storm shelter of approximately 12,000 SF
- construction of a new gym with ICF walls and special steel joists roof structure.
- revision of existing site utilities in the area of the new additions
- additional parking
In 2021, construction was completed on the last of eight new middle school gymnasiums. The new gyms feature twelve inch thick concrete on floors and ceilings giving each of our middle school campuses a storm shelter that can withstand an F5 tornado. (Note: Woolley and Frasier, our two newest middle school campuses, were both built with a second gymnasium and storm shelter.)
Opening August 2023
The 34th elementary school for Mesquite ISD will be a mirrored repeat plan of Mesquite ISD’s Hanby Elementary School. The two-story building, serving 1,000 students, will be built south of I-20 in the southeast portion of the school district zoning. The site for the school and adjoining park, lies in a newly developed residential area of Mesquite, Texas. Surrounding the exterior of the new building, a playground and learning courtyard will be built located on the backside of the school and fenced for student security. In addition, a 3/4-mile walking trail that connects the school and adjoining park will surround the building and playfield, backstop, and space for a lighted playground and lighted basketball courts to be provided by the City of Mesquite. The interior of the school will feature 33 classrooms and several multi-purpose rooms for collaborative learning. Sustainability for the building includes natural daylight throughout the spaces, shading devices, and many more features.
