What is Social-Emotional Learning in Mesquite ISD?

Mesquite ISD counselors believe that quality developmental guidance activities can positively impact school culture and be a proactive way to interact with students and help them build social skills and relational skills that they can carry into adulthood.  Guidance activities cover a variety of topics, from making good choices and being a good friend to conflict resolution and what to do with big feelings, awareness of our own feelings and the feelings of others. In Mesquite ISD, we are using a Social-Emotional Learning Model that emphasizes building safe relationships with our students and creating a universal language for self-control, empathy and resilience. We operate under the four domains of our CARE model: Connection, Awareness, Resilience and Empathy.

Why is Social-Emotional Learning important?

People with strong social-emotional skills are better equipped to manage daily challenges, build positive relationships, and make informed decisions. Social-Emotional Learning helps students and adults thrive in school and in life.

Why is Mesquite ISD doing Social-Emotional Learning surveys?

As part of our efforts, our students and teachers will participate in several exercises to better understand these concepts and their own social-emotional skills. We will ask students to reflect on their own mindsets and approaches to learning via a brief online survey they will complete during class. Our students’ responses will provide insights into their experiences and how we can improve and adapt our district to meet their social and emotional needs.
