West Mesquite High School | Culinary
Class of 2025
Emma Hasbun’s love for cooking began with something simple: eggs and tortillas in her grandmother’s kitchen. She was just nine years old, standing on tiptoe at the stove, learning more than a recipe. In that quiet moment, surrounded by warmth and tradition, Emma found the spark that would guide her forward.
She once imagined her future would follow a different path. Inspired by her father, she planned to pursue a career in automotive work. But when their relationship became strained, everything shifted. Emma turned to the kitchen as a place of healing and connection. Cooking became her way of bonding with her mother, and what began as comfort quickly became a calling.
At West Mesquite High School, Emma joined the culinary arts program. She was initially unsure but eager to learn. With the support of mentors like Chef Aaron, she stepped out of her comfort zone. In the kitchen, she found her rhythm. Through the ProStart program, she learned to lead with calm confidence and steady hands. Each school event, every plated meal, and every challenge taught her more than culinary skills. It taught her to believe in her voice, her vision, and her value.
Now, Emma is preparing to attend the Institute of Culinary Education in New York. She hopes to one day open her own restaurant, a place that reflects her journey, honors her roots, and celebrates her creativity. She is building a life with purpose and determination, one that brings pride to her family and creates opportunity for her community.
