A New Chapter in Student Success: Go Offline, You'll Be Fine

Many of you are likely aware that Texas state lawmakers recently passed House Bill 1481, signed into law by Governor Greg Abbott, prohibiting students from using personal digital communication devices during the entire school day.
The law requires Mesquite ISD to implement a "no cell phone" policy during the school day, which includes all personal digital communication devices.
- Cellphones
- Tablets
- Smartwatches
- Earbuds and headphones
- Radios and paging devices
- Any other electronic device used to communicate with others
This applies to all students, on every campus, from the first bell to the last. As outlined by the state, this policy is designed to help create a safer, more focused, and productive learning environment for all students.
We recognize that this change may raise some questions, especially about how families can communicate with their children during the day. Please know that in the event of an emergency or urgent need, you can still contact your child through the school’s main office. Our staff will ensure messages are delivered quickly and with care. The intent behind House Bill 1481 is to limit distractions in the classroom and across campus so students can stay focused on learning, and the research behind it is encouraging. We are confident this change will positively impact the learning environment and are excited for our community to look forward to these benefits:
Less Screens, More Success
- Improved Academic Performance: Studies have shown that when phones are banned, students gain the equivalent of 0.6–1 year of additional learning in math and science. This policy helps us to create a distraction-free environment where every student can focus on their studies and reach their full potential.
- A Better Learning Environment: Research indicates that students who typically struggle academically benefit the most from mobile phone bans, showing greater academic improvements than their higher-performing peers. This policy helps level the playing field, ensuring every student has an opportunity to succeed.
- Increased Classroom Focus: Both students and teachers agree that mobile phones are a significant distraction in the classroom. By removing this distraction, we can create a more engaging and productive learning experience for everyone.
Happier, Healthier Kids
- Reduced Bullying and Cyberbullying: A cell phone ban has been shown to significantly reduce bullying incidents, especially among teenagers. By limiting phone access, we can help curb issues like cyberbullying and the unauthorized sharing of photos and videos.
- Less Drama, More Friends: When students aren't glued to their screens, they are more likely to engage in face-to-face interactions, building stronger social connections and a more positive school culture.
- Improved Mental Health and Sleep: Excessive phone use is linked to increased stress, anxiety, and sleep problems in teenagers. The constant stream of notifications and social media can contribute to a fear of missing out (FOMO) and interfere with healthy sleep cycles, which are crucial for mental and physical well-being.
- Better Social Skills: In-person communication teaches valuable skills like reading body language, facial expressions, and tone of voice. Reducing reliance on phones gives students more opportunities to practice these essential social skills and build meaningful relationships.
