Jeffrey Johnson – Principal – Mesquite Academy
Jeff Johnson has completed 21 years in the field of education, with 12 of them spent in Mesquite ISD. Cumulatively as a teacher and coach, he has spent a total of 18 years in Clear Creek, Mabank and Mesquite ISDs. He served as an English teacher and head baseball coach at Poteet High School prior to being promoted to Mesquite High School assistant principal in 2018. Johnson graduated from Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, in 2000 with a bachelor’s in English. He earned his master’s in educational administration from Lamar University in 2009.
Christina Alvarez – Principal – Floyd Elementary School
Christina Alvarez has spent her entire 14 years in education in Mesquite ISD. In 2007, she began her career as an elementary teacher at Porter Elementary School. During her seven years at Porter, she taught first, third and sixth grades. She later served as a student success teacher at Mackey and Gray Elementary schools and as a Title 1 instructional specialist at Henrie Elementary. For the past five years, Alvarez has been assistant principal at Achziger Elementary School. She received a bachelor’s in interdisciplinary studies from the University of Texas at Dallas in 2007 and a master’s in educational leadership from Texas A&M-Commerce in 2011.
New Assistant Principals
Angie Campanello – Assistant Principal – Tisinger Elementary
Angie Campanello has completed 18 years of experience as a teacher – 16 years with Mesquite ISD. Her career began in Dallas ISD teaching fourth and sixth grades. She was hired in Mesquite in 2005 as a substitute teacher teaching fifth grade at Austin Elementary, where she has spent 10 years as a teacher. For the past six years, she has served as Austin’s instructional specialist. Campanello earned a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of North Texas and a master’s in school administration from Lamar University.
Courtney Cross – Assistant Principal – Galloway Elementary School
Courtney Cross has a total of nine years in education. She started her career in Mesquite ISD at Terry Middle School, where she taught English from 2012 to 2018. For the past three years, she has served that campus in the position of student success coordinator. Cross received a bachelor’s in education from Grambling State University in 2011 and a master’s in educational technology and leadership from Lamar University in 2019.
Ashaunda Giles – Assistant Principal – Wilkinson Middle School
Ashaunda Giles, who has completed 14 years in education, began her career in 2006. She has experience teaching high school English at Faith Family Academy in Dallas and Lancaster High School in Lancaster ISD. From 2011 until 2018, she and her husband moved to Abu Dhabi and signed on as teachers there. Giles taught English in the United Arab Emirates’ Eastern Region until 2015. She also taught secondary English in West Africa from 2016 to 2018. After returning to the United States, she was hired in Ferris ISD as an eighth-grade English teacher and was there one year prior to being hired as an English teacher at Mesquite High School in 2019. In 2020, she moved to Wilkinson Middle School to become the comprehensive consolidated early intervention services teacher. She received a bachelor’s in 2001 from the University of North Texas and her master’s in education in 2014 from Walden University in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Miriam Rodriguez – Assistant Principal – Cannaday Elementary School
Miriam Rodriguez has a total of 18 years of experience in public education. In 2003, she was hired in Dallas ISD as a bilingual teacher at Lipscomb Elementary School and served 10 years before coming to Mesquite ISD. In 2013, she joined Mesquite ISD as a bilingual teacher at Shands Elementary School. She returned to Dallas ISD in 2018 and served one year at Botello Elementary School as an assistant principal. She has been at Cannaday Elementary School since 2019 as the campus intervention specialist/testing coordinator. Rodriguez received a bachelor’s in civil engineering and a bachelor’s in Spanish from the University of Texas at Austin in 2000. She earned a master’s of education in leadership and policy and a master’s of bilingual education from Southern Methodist University in 2018.
Paris Scott – Assistant Principal – Berry Middle School
Paris Scott has a total of five years of teaching experience, all of which have been in Mesquite ISD. She was hired in 2016 at Poteet High School as an algebra 1 teacher and served as the lead teacher in that subject before being recommended this year for an assistant principal position at Poteet. Scott earned a bachelor’s in secondary education with a major in mathematics from Louisiana State University in 2016 and a master’s in educational administration from Texas A&M University-Commerce in 2020.
Stacye Cunningham – Assistant Principal – Henrie Elementary School
Stacye Cunningham has a career in education that spans 21 years. She spent the first decade working in Terrell ISD’s Head Start program, where she served as a teacher, grade-level chair and education coordinator. In 2013, she joined Dallas ISD as a fifth-grade reading teacher at Ebby Halliday Elementary and later taught at Annie Webb Blanton Elementary. In 2019, Cunningham came to Mesquite ISD to serve as an ESL teacher and instructional specialist at Rutherford Elementary. In 2020, she moved into the role of student success teacher and at-risk coordinator at Rutherford Elementary. From Texas A&M University-Commerce, she received a bachelor’s in education in 2000 and a master’s degree in early childhood education in 2004.
