Approved Plans Reveal the Future of Poteet High School

The proposed plan for Poteet High School includes both new construction and significant renovations aimed at addressing long-standing facility challenges and preparing the campus for future generations.
Currently, the campus relies heavily on portable classrooms, which are disconnected from the main building and limit collaboration and accessibility. The new design will eliminate these portables by incorporating classrooms into a newly constructed academic wing.
This new addition will also include a multi-purpose space designed to serve as a storm shelter, improving campus safety while providing flexible use for students and staff.
Improved Learning Spaces and Student Flow
Plans also focus on modernizing existing learning environments. Many classrooms will be resized to meet current Texas Education Agency standards, allowing for more flexible instruction and improved student engagement.
In addition, the campus will see major upgrades to shared spaces such as the cafeteria and library. These areas will be reimagined as open, central hubs of student life, creating a more welcoming and connected campus atmosphere.
A redesigned main corridor will improve traffic flow throughout the building, reducing congestion and making it easier for students to navigate between classes.
Addressing Infrastructure and Accessibility Needs
The project also includes critical infrastructure upgrades identified through a facilities assessment, such as improvements to electrical systems, HVAC, plumbing, and fire safety systems.
Accessibility improvements are also a priority, including updates to meet ADA standards in key areas like restrooms, locker rooms, and walkways.
Looking Ahead
In total, the Poteet High School project includes approximately 25,900 square feet of new construction and more than 94,000 square feet of renovations, representing a significant investment in the future of the campus.
These updates are part of Mesquite ISD’s broader bond program, which continues to focus on improving facilities, enhancing safety, and creating modern learning environments across the district.
As planning continues, the district remains committed to keeping the community informed and engaged every step of the way.
