Board Approves Early Childhood Learning Academy Design and Advances Major Bond Projects

Mesquite ISD continues to make progress on major bond projects that will support students, families and staff across the district. During the latest Board of Trustees meeting, trustees approved the schematic design for the new Early Childhood Learning Academy and advanced renovation and addition projects at two high schools.
The Early Childhood Learning Academy is designed to create a welcoming, safe and engaging learning environment for the district’s youngest students. The planned facility includes 28 classrooms organized into four learning pods, with each pod featuring classroom spaces, teacher areas, storage, restrooms, collaboration zones, reading nooks and library corners. The design also includes immersive learning classrooms, dining areas, a daycare area, nursing and special education spaces and a multipurpose room that will also serve as a storm shelter.
The campus is planned near Phaeton P. Lucas and McKenzie Road and is organized around a central outdoor play courtyard. The site design includes separate traffic flow areas for parent drop off and buses, supporting safety and efficiency during arrival and dismissal. The design team shared that the facility is intended to be welcoming, inspiring, interactive, flexible, inclusive and accessible for students, families and staff.
In addition to the Early Childhood Learning Academy, the board approved CORE Construction as the construction manager at risk for renovation and addition projects at both Poteet High School and Mesquite High School.
The Poteet High School renovation and additions project has an estimated cost of $47.9 million. The Mesquite High School addition and renovation project has an estimated cost of $52 million. By selecting CORE Construction for both high school projects, the district was able to take advantage of a combined package that reduced the contractor fee on both projects.
These approvals mark continued progress in Mesquite ISD’s bond program and reflect the district’s commitment to creating safe, modern and student centered learning environments for current and future generations.
