Dr. Vroonland Announcement Retirement

On Monday, Dec. 13, 2021, MISD Superintendent David Vroonland announced that he will retire from his position effective June 30, 2022, after 36 years serving in public education.

“It has been an honor and a blessing to lead this district for the last seven years,” said Dr. Vroonland. “I want to thank our community and the Board for their trust and support. We have been through a lot together, and I am so proud of all we have accomplished for the children of Mesquite.”

“Dr. V” is often referred to as a visionary and pioneer. His many accomplishments during his MISD superintendency include:

  • ReadPlayTalk, a community-supported initiative to champion early childhood literacy among our students.
  • ETIP (Excellence in Teaching Incentive Program), the first of its kind that allows teachers to grow professionally and financially while staying in the classroom.

  • AYO, an innovation with technology powerhouses Google and SoftServe to tailor a student’s education based on aptitudes and passions.

  • Vanguard High School, the district’s first choice career high school.

  • Accreditation, a groundbreaking locally led accountability system for MISD.

  • The awarding of guaranteed teaching contracts to our high school seniors in the Ready, Set, Teach! or Child Guidance program who return to MISD after graduating college and meet certain criteria.

  • Leadership and Empowerment Team (LET), formed to remove barriers to students so they can become the leaders they want to be, and its Emerging Leaders program, a novel student leadership pathway.

  • LTO (Leadership Through Ownership), a distributive leadership model that guides staff members to take tangible steps to become more effective employees and leaders better suited for their professional aspirations.

Dr. Vroonland said by announcing his decision now he hopes to give the Board ample time to prepare for the transition to a new leader. "Led by Board President Eddie Rose, I have every confidence that the Board’s commitment to continued excellence will be shown as the members determine the path forward. I appreciate your dedication to our district and community. It has been a privilege to serve as your superintendent," said Vroonland.
