Innovative Calendar
Mesquite ISD is working to address the struggle we are facing in an extreme teacher shortage and the resulting impacts on students, including unfilled teaching positions, hiring a large number of non-certified teachers, larger class sizes, less teacher planning time, etc. One option being examined is a 4-day instructional week. Many small school districts have embraced this model as a valuable tool for retaining and recruiting teachers.
The 4-day instructional week would allow MISD to structure a schedule that gives staff more flexibility with their time to plan and address instructional needs with the goal of improving overall performance.
In exploring this option, the district has sought input from staff members throughout the organization, parents and students. Click on the "resources" on this page to learn about the process, review input from various stakeholders and see the results of our staff and parent survey. You may also view a video excerpt from the Feb. 13 Board meeting. Many questions about the 4-day instructional week concept were answered during that discussion between Board members and district staff.
The Board of Trustees will make a decision about the 4-day instructional week calendar no later than March 6, 2023.
