Colby Tolbert - PHS, Class of 2008
Colby Tolbert

Poteet High School
Class of 2008
Colby Tolbert, proud Mesquite native and owner of Tolbert Garage Door, is proof that there’s more than one path to success. Rooted deeply in the community where he grew up, Tolbert built his business, and reputation, on the same values he developed as a varsity football player at Poteet High School - discipline, resilience and teamwork.
After graduating in 2008, Tolbert chose a different route than some of his peers. He stepped into the workforce and began building his career in the trades, quickly learning how to solve problems under pressure while delivering quality service with integrity. Those early lessons became the foundation for what would eventually grow into one of the most recognized garage door companies in Mesquite and across the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
Building a Legacy
At Mesquite ISD, we know the lessons students learn exceed far beyond the classroom and shape who they become. For Tolbert, the foundation built during his years in Mesquite ISD helped form the work ethic and leadership mindset that later carried him into business ownership. His work has been recognized throughout the Metroplex, including features on CBS 11 News and Good Morning Texas. He has also earned accolades from 3BestRated.com, Living Magazine and Star Local Media. In 2023, Tolbert was selected for Marquis Who’s Who, an honor recognizing individuals who have made meaningful contributions in their fields.
Paying it Forward
For Tolbert, success isn’t just measured in business growth. Mentorship has become one of the most meaningful parts of his journey. He works with students across multiple school districts, helping them navigate life decisions, build confidence and see opportunities they may not have realized were possible.
He also remains active in local events, youth sports and various outreach initiatives. From growing up in Mesquite to building multiple businesses and giving back, Tolbert says his mission remains simple - to lift people up, create opportunities and make a positive impact on the place he calls home.
Favorite High School Memory
When reflecting on his time at Poteet, Tolbert says some of his best memories center around relationships built on and off the field. “Playing in the playoffs with my teammates at FC Dallas Stadium in Frisco is something I’ll never forget,” he shares. “We lost a heartbreaking close game, but that night is a memory that will stay with me forever.”
Advice from Colby to Current Students
“Anything is possible,” Tolbert says. “There has been a lack of high school students being interested in the service trades industry, and it’s created a major void. Because of that, the demand and pay for experienced technicians is extremely high.” He encourages students to consider all options after graduation, including careers in the skilled trades. “Most technicians, even with minimal experience, are earning more than many students who complete four-year degrees. The consistency and security of the work is incredibly valuable. The skills you learn in the trades can take you almost anywhere in the country. With proper training and dedication, you can build a stable, successful and fulfilling career in an industry that truly needs hardworking young people.
