Adrienne Johnson’s passion for helping others has led her on a fulfilling career path centered around compassion, advocacy, and lifelong learning. Today, she serves as a Clinical Social Worker at Children’s Medical Center while also owning a private practice, Peace of Mind Therapy & Consulting, PLLC.

Finding Her Purpose

Johnson's career path wasn't always clear, but her desire to serve others began at an early age. As a student in Mesquite ISD, she initially envisioned her future in healthcare as a nurse, completing clinical rotations while enrolled at Horn High School. It didn't take long for her to realize that nursing wasn't the right fit, but her interest in healthcare and helping others never waivered. After graduating from high school in 2010, Johnson attended the University of North Texas, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in Human Development and Family Studies. It was during that time that she found her true calling. Johnson completed an internship at the Collin County Children's Advocacy Center as an undergrad, which is when she was first introduced to the field of social work and immediately knew that this was the career for her.

Johnson later earned her master’s degree in Social Work from the University of Texas at Arlington in 2018 and became a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Texas State Board-Approved Clinical Supervisor.

Making a Difference

For the past decade, she has served patients and families at Children's Medical Center, supporting them through some of life's most difficult moments. One of the most meaningful experiences of her career was working in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, where she aided families in navigating the challenges of having a child hospitalized. Today, Johnson serves as a clinical educator, providing training and professional development for social workers across the health system. Her role allows her to blend two lifelong passions, education and social work. She collaborates with everyone from frontline staff members to executive leaders, developing systemwide training programs and helping equip healthcare professionals with tools and resources needed to best serve patients and families.

Beyond her full-time role, Johnson is also an Assistant Adjunct Professor for the University of Texas at Arlington School of Social Work and the owner of Peace of Mind Therapy & Consulting, PLLC, where she provides therapy services to clients across Texas both virtually and in person. Johnson credits much of her success to the foundation that was laid at Horn High School.

Favorite High School Memory

"There are so many good memories, it’s hard to name them all," she says. "I miss the football games, pep rallies and just the simplicity of high school overall."

She especially cherishes the friendships and connections built during her time at Horn. As a student, Johnson was actively involved in cheerleading, yearbook and student leadership, experiences that helped shape her high school years and create lifelong relationships.

Advice from Adrienne to Current Students

"Do your research on the path you want to take and be encouraged," says Johnson. "Social work is often misunderstood, but it's an incredibly versatile profession with opportunities in many different areas." She also emphasizes the importance of organization, sacrifice and perseverance.

"You have to be willing to prioritize tasks and stay organized," she explains. "The work can be complex and exhausting at times, but it’s equally rewarding."

Most importantly, she encourages future professionals to stay connected to their purpose.

"There will be challenging days, but it's always important to remember your why.
