Why AI?

Artificial intelligence is changing the way people learn, work, create, and solve problems. As AI becomes more common in everyday life, students need to understand how to use it responsibly and think critically about the information it provides.

At Mesquite ISD, we believe AI should be used as a tool to support learning, not replace it. Our focus is on helping students and staff use AI in ways that are safe, ethical, and connected to meaningful learning.

Mesquite ISD’s approach to AI keeps people, learning, and responsibility at the center. AI can support teachers, help students explore ideas, improve access to information, and prepare learners for future opportunities.

  • AI is becoming an essential part of college, careers, and everyday life. Mesquite ISD believes students should learn how to use AI safely, responsibly, and effectively so they are prepared for future opportunities.

     

  • All students have access to Google Gemini, NotebookLM, and Microsoft Copilot. Depending on age, students also have access to a variety of district vetted digital resources. A master list of digital resources that have been approved through Mesquite ISD’s rigorous approval process can be found on the MISD Student Technology Page.

     

  • It depends on the assignment and the teacher's expectations. If your teacher allows AI, you may use district approved tools to brainstorm ideas, organize your thinking, or refine your work. You are still responsible for creating original work and properly acknowledging and citing your use of AI. If your teacher does not allow AI, using it for any part of the assignment is considered academic dishonesty. Refer to the AI Playbook for more detailed information.

     

  • Submitting AI generated work as your own is considered plagiarism and is prohibited. Violations will be addressed according to the Mesquite ISD Student Code of Conduct and Acceptable Use Policy.

     

  • Yes. Student privacy is a top priority. Mesquite ISD provides access only to school specific versions of Google Gemini and Microsoft Copilot. These platforms keep student data within the district's secure environment and comply with privacy laws such as FERPA and COPPA.

     

  • Not every AI tool is appropriate or approved for students. Mesquite ISD carefully reviews and approves digital resources before they are used in classrooms. Educational versions of Google Gemini and Microsoft Copilot include additional safety features designed to help protect students from inappropriate or harmful content.

     

  • Our AI literacy skills progression ensures learning is always developmentally appropriate. In the earliest elementary grades, students build foundational technology application concepts through offline, hands-on activities before moving to teacher-guided exploration and, eventually, professional-level mastery by graduation. Please refer to the AI Literacy Skills Progression document for your specific grade-level expectations.

     

  • Families can use AI to support learning and curiosity while promoting safe, ethical, and responsible use rooted in transparency and open, honest conversations. Mesquite ISD also provides resources and videos to help families understand appropriate AI use at home.
